I just bought what was listed as an '80 KZ440 starter off ebay and I recieved it today. And its the wrong part... I'm thinking this is an error on the behalf of the seller as all the other starters for the KZ440 and 400 all appear the same.
...Which brings me to the next question. Are 400 starters compatible with 440's? I would assume they are interchangeable as they appear the same and are for almost the same motor...

This is the one in particular that I'm looking at. It gives some numbers off the case and mine are different... mine read (the original that came w/ the bike... its too burned up to rebuild): Mitsuba sm-8203 12v 0.6 kw And the One on Ebay reads: Mitsuba SM-2 12V 0.45kwh The nums don't match, but if the starter is close enough to spin and not burn up any of my electronics, then thats fine by me. The case design looks identical to the original so I'm thinking that it'll fit... I just wanted some input? Anyone?

Have you contacted the seller and asked them yet? Often times they can clear up such questions easily
It looks like the only non-physical difference is that your original one draws more current then the one you bought off of ebay. According to Kawasaki, Quote:
Basically, it looks like that motor should work, assuming it fits physically.

Just to add I have an 81 440 and a 79 400 my started went on my 440 and I just swapped the 400 for it and it works just fine. Not sure if this helps at all but at least I can tell you of a practical application of a 400 fitting and working on a 440.

It sure has turned out to be a numbers game.... after waiting almost a month for a replacement starter for my 1983 KZ250 LTD Belt I finally got it, only to find they had sent me the MITSUBA SM-8203 12v 0.6 kw you quoted in your post.
I contacted the seller, but based on the S&H from Canada to California and a 35% restocking charge I might as well keep it and possibly someone in the forum might be looking for one.... in the meantime, has anyone come across a starter for my 1983 KZ250 LTD Belt?
