Default 1981 KZ1000 CRS Carbs

I just picked up my "new" 1981 KZ1000 CRS. I have a couple of questions since I havn't found a shop manual yet. My set-up is pods and a 4 into 1 SuperTrapp. It also has a new non-vacuum petcock, Dingel I think. The bike starts fine on choke, but doesn't idle without the choke. I am assuming the PO re-jetted when he went to pods and 4 into 1, but I have no clue what he actually did or what he put on. The PO told me he believes the bike is running lean...

While the bike only has 11K on it, it has sat alot, and I suspect the carbs are gummed up and need a good thorough cleaning, o-rings and gaskets replaced. My questions are: 1) how do I identify the carbs? and 2) Is there a decent instruction on removing and working on the carbs for this bike anywhere? Appreciate any guidance, it's my first Kawasaki and all my experience is on Suzuki's and Mikuni carbs.

Thanks,
Norseman10

As far as the manual is concerned you can find one here...

Because the pilot jets are clogged.

Default Where to buy parts?

Thanks for the info!

Where's the best place to buy parts for a 1981 KZ1000? I tried my local dealer, but their catalog goes only back to 1984. I would like to buy o-rings and gaskets since I'm going to have the carbs off the bike anyway.

I buy some 1981 KZ1000 CSR parts by mail order from Z1, some from a local independant bike shop, and some from our local Kawasaki dealer, after looking up the part # under owner info/parts lists on Kawasaki's web site. The dealer has to look at his microfiche parts list prior to 1989 and is reluctant to do so. Check out the sources listed at the top of the vintage bike section here in the forum. Best of luck with your CSR

Default Thank You!

OldColdAnkles, thank you so much for your info, it helps a lot. Also, it was good to hear from you, I was starting to feel a little lonely with my 1981 KZ1000 CRS-M1, but I see you have the identical bike/model.

Best regards,
Walter

You're welcome Walter - you'll also find lots of information on the KZRider.com site as many of us vintage riders frequent that site also......John

Congrats on your new KZ..... I have been able to get parts for mine from the local Kawasaki dealer. I usually get them the part # first from the Kawasaki web site though, I have run across a few that have been discontinued though
not too many. As far as engine parts, I found a local lawn and garden tractor dealer that sells equipment with Kawasaki motors. I took them a couple of part #'s and was able to get a few things from them for about 1/2 of what the dealer price was..... Good Luck and Ride Safe...
Just one ? though............Where's the pictures... We all must have pictures HA HA......
Have a Great Day.... Don

Default What brand carbs?

Thanks again, guys. I have to profess I'm very proud of my new bike. I was fortunate to find it locally, and the seller is a very honest fellow whom I befriended. The bike has 11K, been kept inside, not a speck of rust, and very clean.

The only problem is it sat for a long time and I'll have to clean the carbs, replace gaskets/o-rings, intake o-rings, etc. The boots appear to be in good condition; soft, pliable, and no cracks (at least visually while still on the bike). It won't idle without choke, and bogs down to the point of not even getting up my driveway (incline). It will idle at 2000 rpm using the throttle but with a little bit of popping. Once I get it going on the road, it runs and pulls great, but man, I really have to crank and wait getting out of 1st gear! Now if I could find a OEM factory service/repair manual, I'd be a happy camper.

Do any of you folks know what carbs Kawasaki put on the 1981 KZ1000 CRS? The carbs do not have any markings on them that I can see while still mounted, but the style looks very much like Mikuni.

The carbs are Mikuni BS34's Walter, and the Kawasaki service manual is p/n 99924-1026-01. I bought mine used, on eBay, for about $25. You can also obtain a Clymer manual. Your mileage is very low. These engines are good for around 60,000 to 100,000 miles if maintained properly.

And parts are no problem as mechanically they are identical to the KZ1000P Police bike which was made up until about two years ago. I think the last model was a KZ1000P23.

Thanks, you guys are really helpful! I found a KZ1000 Polic Factory Service Manual printed in April 1982 on eBay for $20 plus $6 shipping. It sounds like that would do the job. I also have a Suzuki GS650GLX for which I bought the Clymer manual, but I'm somewhat disappointed in the Clymer. I keep hearing that factory service manuals have more information and greater detail.

Thanks again,
Norseman10

They do. You need the base KZ1000-1100 manual. The police bike is a supplement to repair the differences in the police bike, won't work.

Default Thanks for the heads-up.

Thanks, elr658, I'm glad you clarified that. I will hunt down the base manual.

IIRC it has a burgundy cover with a KZ1000J on it. I actually can't find mine.
