My son has a 1982 650 CSR that he wants to replace the handlebars on. We would like to go with something flatter, wider and with less pullback. I have Flander Flat Track Lows on my Superglide and something along those lines appeals to him.
I would like to hear from anyone who has made this kind of change to hear about your problems and how you resolved them. The local Kawasaki parts guy told me that cables are just the start of things that need to be addressed. The master cylinder will also have to be replaced according to him, as the original will be tilted over if the bars are flatter? Looking forward to your input, pictures would be great too. |

I just read a blurb about these ADJUSTABLE clubman bars in a bike rag. I'm pondering getting a set.

I replaced the bars on my 81 KZ440 with Clubman bars. I had to replace my clutch cable with a shorter cable. I have yet to replace my throttle cable as it is long and sticks out the front a little more then I would like. I didn't replace anything for my front brakes and was able to get my brake lever and master cylinder to line up pretty will. Here are some pics of my parts bike with the original set up and then my bike as it is now.. As herk mentioned go to Z1Enterprises that is where I got my new clutch cable and for a very reasonable price too.

Probably your best bet as far as cables go would be to get them from either an 82 GPZ 750 or a 83 750 L3 they are pretty much the same bike. Both used very low bars and they also have CV carbs like what is on your bike. Idealy swapping the master cylinder should also be done but I have seen lots of people just run the tilted stock master cylinder. The master cylinder brake line from either of these should also work and may be cheaper than having a custom line made.

I am a single mom and I am trying to get my bike back on the road after being disabled for the past 3 years. I want to ride again. However, I have put $600 into it in labor, only to find out I can not get the carb floats I need. It makes me sick to think I cannot ride again, But I cannot afford another bike, especially after putting this money into my bike. Please, if you know where I can get the floats, or someone who has this bike who may buy it for parts, please contact me. I have spent hours online with no success. I am desperate!! Thank You. Tracy

I changed the bars on my 82 750 ltd to answer racing dirt bike bars. All i had to do is drill holes in the bars where the switches mount (for the metal pin). I used the stock mc and just tilted the bike and turned the bars so i was able to fill the mc. The cables and wires are all too long as far as looks go, but the bike stops and rides fine. One day I will change the cables but for now I will just ride it (the bike was free anyway). I also put roller bearings in my steering tube, what a difference and fairly cheap.

Tracy for starters you are looking for the wrong PN the correct PN for your float is 16030-1013 and it was used in all the following bikes.
KZ1000-J1 (1981) KZ1000-J2 (1982) KZ1000-J3 (1983) KZ1000-K1 (LTD) (1981) KZ1000-K2 (LTD) (1982) KZ1000-M1 (CSR) (1981) KZ1000-M2 (CSR) (1982) KZ1000-P1 (Police 1000) (1982) KZ1000-P10 (Police 1000) (1991) KZ1000-P11 (Police 1000) (1992) KZ1000-P12 (Police 1000) (1993) KZ1000-P13 (Police 1000) (1994) KZ1000-P14 (Police 1000) (1995) KZ1000-P15 (Police 1000) (1996) KZ1000-P16 (Police 1000) (1997) KZ1000-P17 (Police 1000) (199 KZ1000-P18 (Police 1000) (1999) KZ1000-P19 (Police 1000) (2000) KZ1000-P2 (Police 1000) (1983) KZ1000-P20 (Police 1000) (2001) KZ1000-P21 (Police 1000) (2002) KZ1000-P22 (Police 1000) (2003) KZ1000-P24 (Police 1000) (2005) KZ1000-P3 (Police 1000) (1984) KZ1000-P4 (Police 1000) (1985) KZ1000-P5 (Police 1000) (1986) KZ1000-P6 (Police 1000) (1987) KZ1000-P7 (Police 1000) (198 KZ1000-P8 (Police 1000) (1989) KZ1000-P9 (Police 1000) (1990) KZ1000-R1 (Eddie Lawson Replica) (1982) KZ1000-R2 (Eddie Lawson Replica) (1983) KZ1100-A1 (Shaft) (1981) KZ1100-A2 (Shaft) (1982) KZ1100-A3 (Shaft) (1983) KZ1100-D1 (Spectre) (1982) KZ1100-D2 (Spectre) (1983) KZ1100-L1 (LTD Shaft) (1983) KZ650-H1 (CSR) (1981) KZ650-H2 (CSR) (1982) KZ650-H3 (CSR) (1983) KZ700-A1 (1984) KZ750-K1 (LTD Belt) (1983) KZ750-K2 (Canada Only) (1984) KZ750-L3 (1983) KZ750-M1 (CSR Twin) (1982) KZ750-R1 (GPz) (1982) ZN1100-B1 (LTD Shaft) (1984) ZN1100-B2 (LTD Shaft) (1985) ZX750-A1 (GPz 750) (1983) ZX750-A2 (GPz 750) (1984) ZX750-A3 (GPz 750) (1985) Kawasaki shows it as still available but I doubt that you need new floats. What was the problem when you took it to the dealer?

That's my guess as well Herk. I doubt that it even needs new ones. I re-do probably 3 or 4 of these old relics a year and have yet to buy one needle and seat. Most times a few minutes with some Mothers mag polish on the end of a Q-tip and they are as good as new. Odds are good that the guy working on this bike wasn't even born yet when it was made.

You can use Clubman bars upside down. I did that for a while. Kinda comfortable too. Drag bars are ok, but don't leave you much space for putting everything back on the bike. I have ProTek clip-on bars now & love 'em.

No hon....what I need are the valve floats, not the carb float & float pins. ANd I called the dealer and the correct part number is #16030-1018. They sent them out to be retooled somehow and were able to get 2 to stop leaking, but said if I could find them, it would bebetter to replace all 4. Any other suggestions? I am soooo discouraged!
