Default 1974 f9 (bighorn)

Hello everyone,
I am new to this forum and just recieved my first bike not to long ago. It is a kawasaki f9 350. The problem is I am haveing trouble getting it started up. It has spark, gas, and 90 lbs of compression but alot of oil it getting into the combustion chamber from the crankcase. It has oil injection but I unhooked it and am running premix so I am sure this is where all the oil is coming from. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be wrong? I pulled the head off and their isnt any bad scoreing on the cylinder walls. I am guessing their might be something wrong with the rings but cannot find a set of stock rings anywhere on the internet. There are thin pieces of metal that go inside the rings that have been shattered. Would this cause the problem? Thanks for any help.

Can you see if the oil getting into the combustion chamber is 2 stroke oil or gear oil ? You could have a blown crank seal, which would make the bike hard to start.

It has to be gear oil as the oil injection is not hooked up.

Then I vote for the crank seal. R.H side.

The seal, #18 in the diagram, is still available from Kawasaki. Part number 653B354808. I made a phone call to a friend who has 3 of these bikes, just to check if there could be anything else that could cause gear oil in the crankcase. He said that if the O-rings 8 and 14 are bad, you'd also have the same symptoms. The O-rings are included in the gasket kit (ebay).

thanks kawah1c. Exactly what I was looking for. I will see what I can find once I get the title and am ready to pull the engine apart. I already have the gasket kit so I hope it is that.

I had one of these years ago and am in the process of restoring an F9 that was converted to a short circuit racing bike.
Anyhow, my old F9 had a similar problem that was traced to the small phillips head screw that was in the end of the crank on the r.h side. It came loose and drilled its way through the cover and let the gearbox oil in to the rotary valve. It was many years ago, so it is all a bit hazzy in the recollection. It may be worth a try if you have had no luck

Sorry guys that I havent been around much. I did wreck in august but it was on a lot larger honda cb750 that I got this summer also. (sorry about the red but it was the right price for a 16 y/o.) I will try to post some pics up soon if it will work. Also I have not yet fixed the leak as my garage is not heated and its been really cold here in southern Wyoming for the past month or 2.

i had one of those motor cycles and the only way i know that it can get motor oil from the crank case gear box is if it has a crack in the case inside or a hole in it because these bikes have a divider made to keep the gear box and oil seperate from the gas and injection oil. sounds like a real bummer because you cant buy parts for them no more not that i know of. where did you get that 350 kawasaki 2 stroke at.

Default 1974 Big Horn

I have a 1974 Big Horn with only 1200 miles, all orig. How much do you think it's worth? I also have a 1974 f-7 175 with 650 orig. miles Both bikes run and are in ex shape, they have been in storage inside a heated shop all these years. I just got them and got them running. I don't know if I'll sell them im just curious. Thanks.
