I definately dont want to wait till redline for my fan to kick on, so manual fan switch it is. Ive got another question. I just purchased a yoshi R&D full exhaust 4into1 system and i was wondering how big to go up on each main jet, ive also got no filter but soon to be k&N. I know on my atv when a got a filter and pipe i went up 4 sizes on my main jet but i didnt know if that would be the same for the ninja or not, i dont really want to buy a whole jet kit, just individual ones there alot cheaper.

Now you've gone and done it.

Your bike is probably never going to work properly unless you devote the time and money to tune it correctly. Just bumping up your main jets likely ain't gonna cut it and buying an entire jet kit is not a magic bullet either.

The mains work from half to full throttle. Getting it to work off the bottom to mid is probably going to take pilot jets and new jet needles or you're going to end up with less than great performance. As a new rider on a new bike, low to medium speed throttle response is going to be very important on how fun, safe, predictible and smooth you can be. These old bikes are slowpokes compared to modern iron but they'll still yank your arms off if ridden hard and they have a lot of torque. Having it carbuerate correctly throughout the entire rev range is going to be very important to you once you start riding it.

Sorry to not be more positive but it you have the stock pipes and airbox/filter, get it running this way first then do your mods. It will be easier if you know where you are starting from rather than tossing on a pipe & K&N and guessing.

I cant help it I like to mod. Im keeping all the original stuff just to have the bike all original as well, seeing as its kinda old and rare. As far as carbs go, ive put about 400 miles on it so far and its running great. My stock filter is in pieces, so thats where the K&N comes in and i got a deal on a full yoshi system that i just couldnt pass up. Can i just adjust the fuel screws to richen up the pilot circuit, and raise the needles up to richen up the midrange. I dont have to have the motor tuned perfect, i just dont want to cause any harm to it by running lean.

I drilled my pilot jets to .040 mm, set the air screws to 2 3/4 turns out from seated, removed the shim I found under each needle and the bike runs perfectly. 4-1 Vance & Hines pipe with a cotton factory filter.

I can tell you that going to pods is going to make tuning a bit harder, but it can be done. I did pods on my KZ550. Also drilled those pilots to .040 mm and it runs like a champ.

My bike has pods on it and I HATE them with a passion. Any turbulence or strong side wind makes the bike run like crap (screws with the air/fuel mixture).....and Ive heard whatever you do DONT get them wet.

So if its windy I have to suck my legs in hard against the filters to make the bike run right. Big pain in the ***.......but maybe the filters on your bike are in a better spot.

Sounds like you need to make yourself a little airbox for the pods.

Is there a reason you havn't gone back to the stock box because you hate the pods so much?

Default hot gpz

yes they do run hot,the best design switch and easy pics to follow is on the gpz zone, ive wired a swich into mine exactly as shown in pix and it works fine and the standard wiring is retained as well so if you forget to switch fan on it will still come on automatically when its almost too late, mine started leakinfg oil out the relief hole on the pump,i put new bearings and a seal in it,fixed oil leak but created a water leak, need a waterpump now if anyones got one?

Great Bike!! I had an 85 as well. For the record that bike would overheat at the hint of a traffic jam. I had the toggle fan too.

One of the first things I had to do was stiffen up the mirror springs so they wouldn't fold in when going 180+. Yeah it was a Great bike....

I dont have the stock air box or trust me, it would be back on the bike. So far I havent found a stock box for a reasonable price, but trust me....Im looking.

Ive seen a few pod boxes and if I cant find a stock box at a fair price I may try making one.
