Angry 1980 Kawasaki Kz 1000 running on 1

Recently I bought a 1980 KZ 1000 that had been setting for 12 years. The throttle and choke were stuck and the inner gas tank had a little rust. other than that the bike appears to be all original and in premium shape. The bike fires up and runs, but only on 1 cylinder. Any Ideas? could it be points and condesers? I also just replace both coils because they had heat stress cracks. Any ideas would be much appreciated!

I really doubt it runs on 1 cyl but nothing is impossible I guess. Points would be a good place to start. I'd also think a complete breakdown and cleaning of the carbs would be in order. With that much sitting I'd be really surprised if they don't have to have rebuild kits put in for dried up gaskets and O-rings if nothing else. Get an in-line filter installed between the tank and carbs and if you can't clean the rust out of the tank start looking at lining it with POR 15 or something similar. Post up some pic's and let us see.

    Default Heat Stress Cracks?

    Goldbeda,

I'm just a novice compared to elr658 and StarGate, so I wouldn't be so presumptious to even say +1 on their feedback, but, oh what the heck: +1.

But if indeed your old coils had heat cracks, I don't think I would just replace them and try to fire the bike up before inspecting and validating the electrical and ignition systems. I would think something caused that condition beyond just sitting idle for twelve years, and I wouldn't want that something to do the same again to brand new coils bought with hard-earned dollars...

There's a lot of posts and threads on the subject of trouble shooting these systems written by some mighty competent folks, do a search and read away. Anyway, just my 2 cents worth...
