Default Engine Swap question (650 in a kz750)

I have a 1976 KZ750 twin. It runs but it's pretty rough. I have the opportunity to buy a 650, including carbs and tranny, for $100. I have no idea what shape it's in, but I was thinking of getting the 650 and doing a complete rebuild and then sticking the 650 on my frame. Will it fit on the frame, and what kind of parts compatibility am I looking at? Are the trannies interchangeable?

My thinking is that I'd rather keep the bike operational so I can continue riding and learning, and then once I complete the engine rebuild I can switch it in so I have a nicely freshened up 4 cylinder.

Now that that has been answered, can you put a 900 motor in a 650 frame?

I asked that because I have a hole in the front of my case with a connecting rod sticking out of it

This didn't just happen did it or is this another motor you have just sitting around? If this is a new CCV (Complete Crankcase Ventilation) hole, man, you have bad luck.

Luck is something other people have! Yes, it's true, I will take some pics today.

I was riding to work Friday, and knew immediately that I had lost a cylinder. Got it stopped, looked up front, and it was leaking oil from the hole. Then the oil started on fire! I tried to put the small fire out, but only managed to burn my hand on the exhaust.

So I have a winter project, either that or I give up!

Oh man! Look for the bright spots...at least it didn't oil the back tire and put you down. Sorry for your misfortunes.
