I have a 82 KZ1000 LTD that is in pristine condition.....about 2 weeks ago I noticed I didn't have ANY turn signals left or right.....I did have emergency flashers.....The book says it would most probably be the relay.....I did find the relay to be an automobile 522 relay.....put same in....no help.....went through the wiring to make sure everything was connected....it was....so now I'm down to the "Turn Signal Control Unit" located on the bottom of the battery tray.....Now I'll tell you what I did.....I went ahead and bought the control unit and a turn signal relay.....the relay is a Kawasaki p/n and it's about 8 times more expensive as the one for the car..... don't know if it will make much difference as they worked with no problems....no fuses blown.....I really want it fixed.....oh yeah, the self cancelled portion doesn't work either...so no turn signals and no self cancel.....any help would be most appreciated.......from a newbie.......thanks Bruce

This may get a bit long but I'll try to keep it short while giving you some info that might help.
The turn signal relay is fed through a fuse and has power when the ign switch is on. It then goes to the turn signal switch and out to the selected lights. This portion of the turn signals does not involve the control unit and if all this is good then your signals should work. Thats assuming all the bulbs, grounds, etc are also good. I suspect your selector switch has dirty contacts. Mine is an 81 and had the same problem about 2 yrs ago. I was able to open it up and sand the contacts and lubricate them and that portion works great now. Beware, these are tiny parts inside that switch and easy to lose if you open it. Now for the nasty part. The self canceling portion has a few things that can go wrong. The key components involved are the odometer sending unit, the signal control unit, and the solenoid inside the selector switch housing. When either turn signal is activated, a signal is fed from the switch to the control unit. It initiates a timer inside the unit. At the same time, the control unit starts counting pulses that are sent from the odometer sending unit. Both conditions (time & distance traveled) must be met and which ever condition is last to be satisfied, is the one that determines when the 12v is sent to the solenoid. The signal switch is spring loaded and is attempting to return to the center position anytime you have one of the signals on but it has a small catch holding it in place. When the solenoid receives the 12v from the control unit it releases the catch and the switch returns to the center/off position. I hope this helps you in locating your problem and sorry if it's just telling you what you already knew. As you might guess, I've had some "experience" with this system. Experience: When you are expecting one thing but get something entirely different, thats EXPERIENCE. |
