Default 1980 KZ650 Coils

While rebuilding the carbs and replacing the valve cover gasket I discovered that both of my coils are cracked open, obviously not good. To buy the exact same coils and wires it's going to run me about $400, which I don't have. Now I noticed that Z1 has Dyna dual output coils for around $120 per pair. Now my questions; would it be a good purchase and how do I know what ohm my current coils are, Dyna offers 1.5, 2.2, and 3.0?

Look in your service manual under the section that covers troubleshooting the ignition. There should be a check for the coils where it will give a resistance range. For mine, they should read 1.8-2.8 ohms. Then you get the coil that falls in the middle of that range or closest to it. I got the 2.2 ohm. And thats not the only 3 that Dyna makes.

Don't quote me, check by calling Jeff at Z1. I think the 650's use 3 ohm. And Z1 also has a generic looking coil for $35 that should work. Again, call Jeff and tell him what you have.

I've installed the 3 ohm ACCEL kit which includes the wires on my 650 and it works well. I was able to buy it through Motorcycle Accessory Warehouse via eBay. The ACCEL coils also work well with the Dyna S ignition module and makes for a very smooth idling engine.

Just another choice to consider.
