Default '82 750 LTD: Replacing float valve needle & seat

Hi everyone I was just wanting everyone suggestions about replacing float valve needle & seat in one of my carbs. Is this a detailed operation, other words should a mechanic take care of it or is it something I could do (I am a novice, but have done some work on the bike i.e. oil changes, tach line replacement).

I would appreciate anyones thoughts and instructions

I would not ride a bike leaking gas. The fire that is likely to start will be about four inches away from the family jewels.

Changing the needles and seats is easy if you can get the bowls off. You do need to adjust the float levels with new needles and seats.... which is probably the problem you have which is making the ones you have leak.

be careful when you take the bowls off if the gaskets don't seat up properly when you put the bowls back on you might have a problem with the engine surging.

interesting...are you saying this could be a possible airleak if the seal is not proper? i ask because I never considered that before..but had surging problems in the past with carb cleaning/rebuilds

I can on my 750 twin with BS-38 carbs.

Which carbs do you have?

I have never heard of that. The bowl seal to the carb body is not a pressure seal since the bowl area is vented to the atmosphere, it's basically open at the top by design.

Bounty, is it fairly involved to adjust float levels with new needles and seats? Can I do all of this w/ the Carb still on the bike?

Just wanted to note that I have a 4 not a twin

I think you could service this on the bike, but not something I would want to do. I would think that you would need a correct size punch to push out the pin, and the pin holders on the BS's break easily, especially for a ham fisted beginner like I was/am. Outside carbs are obviously easier.
I know the concern, I anted up for a new set of boots on my air box, and can get the carbs in and out in like 10 minutes. Before, well, they never went back on with the original boots.
