Default Idles high when warm 1981 KZ 440 D3

I've finally got my 1981 KZ440 D3 up and running again. I'm having a couple of issues tho. I can set the idle where it needs to be or sounds like it needs to be (as my Tach doesn't have a cable). After I ride it for awhile and come to a stop it idles real high. If I had to guess, by sound alone, about 3500 or 4000 RPMs. Any ideas? I'm hoping it isn't the diaphrams in the carbs as they are very expensive. I just cleaned the carbs real well and replaced the parts that came in the rebuild kits. I set the pilot air screw per spec in my Haynes manual ( 1 & 3/4 turns out) and added some seafoam to my tank just to make sure everything was clean. It does seem to be running a little rich. The exhaust fumes are real strong.

The second issue I'm having is the battery dies and apparently isn't charging. Does anybody know any simple tests to see if it is the Stator or the Rectifier/Regulator?

Thanks for your help!

Under the tank, usually on the left side of the carbs, there will be a small knob sticking out. Turn it toward the front of the bike, and it should turn the high idle down. If this doesn't work, you have air issues.

I did turn the idle down using the knob between the carbs and it idles fine before I ride it. It is just after I ride it and it really warms up that it starts to idle high. It is kind of weird because it rides fine. It is just when I come to a complete stop and either have it in 1st with the clutch in or in neutral that it revs high.

You can't set an idle unless the bike is warm. Try riding it, then mess with the knob.

I'll give that a try. Thanks for the input.

If it's still running rampat and you've got the knob turned all the way down, you've got an air leak somewhere.

I agree with Tina, I was having the same problems. I had air leak around the carb bowl gaskets. You might want to make sure that your throttle cable is adjusted correctly.
