Default z1 900 with 16 rear wheel and no centerstand??

The 1974 Z1 900 I just brought home has a 16 inch rear wheel with a new Dunlop, looks good but not original, and the bike has had the centerstand removed. I was about to get one from ebay, but then i realized that the centerstand might not work right (ie real hard to get it up on the centerstand) due to the lower profile of the wheel (i think its lower). Does anyone know, are centerstands removed because they do not work well with the non stock tire and wheel? thanks for the advice.

Centerstand is a good thing. Even if it's hard to get the bike up on it, you can do it when necessary.

Many stands get removed when 4-1 exhausts get fitted. Ground clearance is an issue, but I suspect your bike now has a 4-1 on it.

That would be correct, a relatively new 4 into 1 set up was on the bike when I got it. Does that mean that the centerstand will no longer fit or operate? the 4 into 1 in a "vance and hines" model or something like that, looks new.

With the 16" rear wheel and a 4-1 you may have problems with ground clearance. Much depends on the exhaust system on the bike. If it is a V&H pipe, then you can use a stand - However, if you fitted a center stand, you'll need to fabricate a bracket to stop the stand hitting the chain.

What many owners do is keep the stand in the garage, fit it when changing rear tires or chains.

1973-1980 900 & 1000's.

Ground clearance - while you won't scrape the stand in a straight line, pushing hard around corners will scrape it - that's what you have to be careful of....

Default I laced a 16 inch rim...

to my Z1 back in the 70's. There was no difference in the diameter of the 16 inch tire and the stock tire, just fatter. The ride was much smoother and the tire lasted twice as long too. There was a clearance problem with the chain guard though. No problem with the center stand.....chris3

I have been spotting centerstands on ebay rights and left, but oddly none seem to have the mounting hardware with them. Am I going to have a tough time rounding up the mounting parts and bushings, or is this pretty easy stuff to come by? thanks in advance.
