Default Internal Cleaning - Oil Change / '79 KZ650SR

Got my carbs dialed in (rebuilt them after a good cleaning including ultra-sound). Bike is purring. Still much more work to do - before now, hasn't been running for at least 10 yrs. I was thinking that I should change the oil with an inexpensive, but high quality oil (and maybe a cleaning additive), let that run thru for awhile (about 1/2 hour at hi-idle), then drain that off before putting in the Kawasaki brand 20-50 and the new filter. That way, any crud that doesn't drain off with the original oil, may come out on the first run-thru.

God idea? bad idea? Induce clutch slippage, maybe?

Your thoughts?

Sea foam is made to do just that.

I used Seafoam and ran it about 100 miles with it in then, changed oil/filter.

Seafoam is very good. You should be aware that after 10 years your oil pan (and everybody else's) will have a sludge layer in the bottom that is pretty much there to stay until you take the pan off and scrub it. Gravity always drops the particles down and forms a sludge layer on the pan that running and flushing can't get rid of. Never took an oil pan off that didn't have some.

If you plan on running at a fast idle for 1/2 hour a very good idea is to get a large fan and keep it on the fastest speed it has. You need a cooling air flow to prevent overheating/seizing of the engine.

Picked up the Seafoam tonight. Good advice on the oil pan. Didn't occur to me, but makes sense. I'll pull that and clean it.
Thanks, gang

+1... SeaFoam and Castrol GTX.
Won't have any clutch issues with the Castrol.
