Default Where to get '82 GPz1100 front rotors?

    Hi guys,

While cleaning up my fork tube pitting problem, I noticed that my front rotors look pretty thrashed. They are deeply grooved and uneven, and my micrometer tells me they are a bit under the 4.5 mm min thickness.

So, where does one obtain replacement rotors, other than E-bay?

I see an outfit on E-bay selling various used KZ1000 rotors, a pair from a 1982, and another pair from a 1993 police KZ1000. I seem to recall that the brake rotors changed between the '81 and '82 GPz1100. Would '82 KZ1000 rotors be the same? What about the '93 police rotors?

    Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Just found them listed here, at

    Buy Honda Parts,Suzuki Parts,Yamaha Parts,Kawasaki Parts,Arctic Cat Parts,Sea Doo Parts,Can Am Parts

They are pretty proud of them--the asking price is $359.49 each!

I later found them at another site (actually, duh, I found the sticky at the top of the forum page and have been surfing around those sites) for $308 and change. A little better, but still....

Okay, so anybody have a good source that won't cost an arm and a leg?

And equally important, can anybody confirm that the KZ1000J, police bike etc. all use the same rotors as the GPz? If so, then E-bay is calling....

    Thanks!

    http://www.kawasaki.com/Home/Home.aspx

Go to owner info, parts diagrams, type in your info. IIRC, when you find the rotor, you click on it and the description comes up. There is a place (I think it is a question mark) that you can click on and it shows all models that came with this same part number.

My GPZ is a mismash of alot of Kawasaki's due to this. I think my rear brake disc is a front disc off of another gpz, and the pads were labeled for a 500 Vulcan.

Although it sounds like you are a prime canidate for a whole front clip change, like off of anything newer. It might be cheaper.

Z1100A1-A3 shaft. Front disc 236 mm, rear disc 236 mm.

GPz B1 twin shock model. Front disc = 236 mm, rear disc = 236 mm

GPz B2 twin shock model. Front disc = 246 mm, rear disc = 236 mm

Z1000J. Front disc 236 mm, rear disc 236 mm

GPz 1100A1-3. Front disc 246 mm, rear disc 236 mm.

However, the unitrack discs look different in design/style to the B2 ones. Worth a closer look to see if the mountings are the same though.

EDIT. ABOVE SIZES ARE WRONG EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE GIVEN BY KAWASAKI IN THEIR TECH. DETAILS

Damn. Using the Kawasaki website tool (great tip, thanks!), it reveals that this part number is only used on the '82 GPz1100 and the '82 and '83 Eddie Lawson Replica.

The question now before the court is, are there other rotors that have a different part number but the same physical characteristics? The post above gives some physical dimensions for various bikes, but it's far from complete. I'd love to know what size the police bikes use, for example, as they are still plentiful in the junkyards.

Thanks to all for your help so far!

    Hi guys,

Looks like Sonny (above) struck out--apparently what he had were smaller rotors. I just roughly measured the ones on my bikes (both '82 GPz1100 and '83 ELR), and they are far larger than the post above would have you believe; they are about 11 inches across. It's difficult to measure them exactly on the bike of course, but the numbers listed above are definitely way wrong--246 mm is only about 9.5 inches.

So, I'm now stuck back at square one. Still looking for '82 GPz or '82-83 ELR front rotors. Anybody??

    Thanks!

Mike, I have to apologise. All the dimensions I quoted are from Kawasaki sales brochures and technical data. It seems they are way out.!!!

I have physically measured the discs on my Z1100A and they are 270mm [approx 10.5" ] front and back.

So I guess the B1 discs are the same, don't know about the B2 then.

Sorry again I will edit my original answer to high light the error.

I'm still thinking that you should go this route: if it is hard to find parts now, how bad will it be if you decide to keep the bike?

That's great to know! I'll definitely go that route if I can't find any decent used stock rotors.

    Thanks very much!
