    Default Gas leaking from carbs...

My bike has been sitting for 4 months and used some stabil to eliminate any kind of build up in the carbs. It took a bit to get the bike started but I finally managed to. The bike sat over night and in the morning I notice gas had dripped onto the engine block. Nothinig on the floor but the carbs were wet and you could see drops. I thought it was bowl gaskets so I took the carbs off. I think its these little tubes that are shown in the picture below. The bike was for the most part running when it was on the kickstand. Not sure what going on. Its a 89 ninja 600r. Carbs have been cleaned before. Thanks

Sorry for the horrible cell phone picture. That is between the two carbs. I think there are two.

Several things can cause this. Bad O-Rings,bad bowl gaskets among others. Make sure your vents are clear. I had one do this and the vents were plugged.

I'd run through a tank of gas, with your choice of cleaners. I have never personally used Stabil or Seafoam in anything, but my mechanic and another one I know use the products, and they deal with alot more bikes than I do.

I do get driippage sometimes, got a lot more before my carbs were redone 2 years ago. I call it character.

Pics a little blurry, but if those are the tubes running between the carbs they should have hoses on them about 18" or so in length and routed towards the rear of bike and down towards the ground somewhere. I would attach a piece of hose and blow through too to make sure the vent tube is not plugged.

is it normal for gas to be dripping from those vents at all? Thanks for all the help.

No. That means that the needles aren't closing and the bowls are overfilling with fuel. These drains prevent overflowing fuel from entering the combustion chamber. You're going to have to pull the carbs and investigate the needles and seat. All it takes is a little chunk of rust to jam the needle from returning to its' closed position. I recommend removing the bowls to clean the seats with a q tip. That may fix the problem. Good luck

Thanks for the reply. It does not leak when the pipe is running. It only leaks when the bike sits over night. The gas tank is also disconnected at this time. I have it pin pointed to either number 3 or 4 carb. I'm not sure if its leaking from that vent or from a bowl gasket. It's very hard to tell. Can i just buy that gasket or do I have to buy the kit? It doesn't make since to me why it's leaking after the bike sits, esp. seeing there is no gas tank on it. What does it sound like, bowl gasket or that vent? Thanks again

    [Carb Kit Capital

They sell just the gaskets. Buy 8 of them since you're paying for shipping. I just recieved mine; they look great.

I ordered some up as well. Now here is the question. My left side floats on carbs 1 and 2 seem higher while the other two seem lower. Is there any reason why they would be adjusted differently? Overall the carbs seem really clean. The gaskets even seem like they are in good shape but I will replace them as well. Is there anything else I should do while I'm in there? I have an exhuast on her but can't afford a jet kit right now. How do I adjust the floats so they are the same and what spec. should they be? Thanks again

    Morning,

The carb floats usually go out of adjustment when the carbs are flipped upsidedown alot and when people bounce the floats with their fingers. This little push can set the floats out of ajustment, as the tabs used to adjust the carbs are being pushed against by the weight of the float. The setting you're trying to shoot for is around 3/8" from the top of the bowl as the lowest. The higher the better, but below the top of the bowl. As long as you're pretty close, it will be fine. Make sure the others are close to each other also. You could mess with them all day and not be in perfect spec, so just make sure they're close.

To make the level higher: compress the tap closer to the float
Lower: Tab bent away from the float (The float will appear higher when held upsidedown)

    Minor adjustment!!

Now it may take a few tries to get this right. Therefore I recommend you do this on a bench. I made my own little fuel tank which has come in handy more times than I can even count now. Using that and a fixture to hold the carbs, I filled them on the bench and then checked the level. This way you can access the floats easier and you don't have to remove the carbs each time. Good luck
