Remove that bolt, and the plate will drop to allow the filter to be removed. There is a secondary bolt too, which allows the oil from the filter housing to be drained before you remove the filter. This is not the main oil drain though...there is another one just to one side of the filter location. As for oil....that depends on the air temperatures that can be expected while running a particular weight oil - I use 10W-40 as the temps here never get too blisteringly hot.

It's not hard to change the oil in it, the biggest issue is getting the bike high enough to get a pan under it and still have some room to manouver, and there may be a clearance issue with the pipe. Get the engine warm first is all I would say.
Ok thanks man! Sounds a little messy to change that filter. Hopefully I can figure it out. How hard is it to find replacement filters? Could I just go into a Kawi shop and get one ordered easily?

Thanks again! Needless to say, the one I'm helping on doesn't look nearly as good as yours!

That was a common filter type for bikes of that vintage. My Honda has pretty much the same design. They should be available at any Kawi shop - though it may be a special order. In my case, the Honda shop near me always has a few in stock.

You can also get them online. They'll run anywhere from around $5-$8.

If they're the same style, then they're a paper filter, which means you have to be more vigilant about changing them. However, there are sites that offer adapters to convert the bolt-on mount to a spin-on type.

I like changing the oil on my KZ. It's a fairly painless process, you can see everything you need to get to, and need no special tools. Yeah, you're going to get dirty, but that's life.

Well.. yeah I know I'll get dirty. I just thought I'd be messy trying to get the filter out cuz of the way the exhaust pipes seem to go under the bike. Eh. The oil will burn off the pipes

Put a rag over the pipes. And I don't mean your wife, either.

It's no real biggy to change it, when it's all typed out like that it seems to be, but in practice, it's not. One other thing though that bears mentioning. The main bolt up through the ribbed round plate extends all the way up and in through the filter. Inside, between the bottom of the plate, and the bottom of the filter, there is a large, about 1"Ø flat washer and a spring, at least on mine there is. I mention this because if the pipe is in the way, it may be neccesary to hold the ribbed plate in place till the bolt is removed, letting everything drop out once the bolt is clear. You may have to fish for them in the drain pan, or just drain the oil outta the pan till you get them...whatever. The order they go back in is with the spring on the bottom and the washer on top of the spring between the spring and the filter. Again, more fiddlesome in writing than in practice. As for the filter, I have been getting real Kawi ones from the dealer....I think Emgo makes 'em too, but I prefer to stick with the Kawi ones.

As for oil on the pipe, you're right....it burns off !!!

Also, thanks again Cheese for the compliment on my bike

That's one nice KZ. May take on a project with my son with that or something similar some day.

Check Walmart. You'll likely find one there.

Unlikely. These are bolt-on filters, not spin on.

True but you have to deduct points for the fuel filter being installed backwards. Andrew you can regain those lost points by sending me all your take off stuff. I recently bought a 77 1000 LTD and I could make good use of all that stuff now taking up valuable space in your garage.

Your painter knows his stuff, that's some fine looking work. The paint scheme reminds me of one used on a KZ400 about 1975 IIRC.

Are they different than the one used on the KZ650 which are internal? I can buy them all day long at the local Wally World.

LoL....Andy, well you could have had those take off parts, but I'm afraid you're wrong about the filter.....it is in correctly....how do I know this ? because I did have it in wrong until I noticed the little arrow with "flow" written inside it ....I get my points back I get my points back

The paint scheme is based on a '75 Z1-B 900 for the tank, and on the '74 Z1-A for the tail. I chose what I feel is the best of those two years....I changed the colour in the top tank stripe from black to charcoal....Tony certainly knows how to spray, that's for sure. Aside from a few specks of dust, there isn't a ripple or a wave in the paint....the pics don't do the colour justice

I think they moved it from main lobby. It was competing with the helmet/small cc debates.

yeah, that was me, but not because it was competing, just trying to clean up the main lobby a bit.
