UTICA -- A Utica man was killed Wednesday night when an airborne motorcycle landed on the car he was driving, Utica police said Thursday.
Ademir Desouza, 34, of Lee Boulevard, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 9:35 p.m. crash that closed two major thoroughfares until the early morning hours of Thursday, police said.
Police said motorcyclist David Szatko, 20, of Hillcrest Street, Whitesboro, was merging from Interstate 790 onto Route 12 south -- just south of Riverside Center -- when he lost control of the motorcycle.
Szatko suffered minor injuries and was treated at St. Elizabeth Medical Center and released. Utica police said no tickets or charges were issued as of Thursday afternoon.
After Szatko was thrown from the motorcycle, the 2004 Kawasaki skidded across the southbound lane of Route 12, struck the guard rail that separates the lanes, became airborne and landed on the roof of Desouza's 1993 Oldsmobile, police said.
Desouza's vehicle then swerved off Route 12 North and came to rest on the entrance ramp of Interstate 790 East.
State police assisted in the case. A helicopter was used to photograph the scene, state police Sgt. Richard Misterka said.
Utica police have accident reconstructionist Jeffrey Pilipczuk and members of the Utica Criminal Investigation Division handling the case.
At the scene Wednesday night, state police, Oneida County sheriff's deputies and Maynard firefighters helped close the affected roadways. Utica firefighters and Kunkle Ambulance also responded.
Police started reopening the roadways about 2:15 a.m. Thursday.
