I would have to agree that the two are very much different. Social networking has become very popular however it is great to hear the comments from this thread. It really doesn't take long to figure out that they will probably never replace each other. It seems to me that folks seem to migrate to the facebook thing for a while however before long you see them back here just as JD pointed out. We have been very selective about what applications we use on this forum. Many forums have social apps and that type of thing but I as well as many of you still enjoy the forum setting. I use facebook for personal networking as well as some business but the forum I use for information and connecting with folks of a specific interest. From there it becomes whatever the individual wants it to be. I am sure many life long friendships are created by both.

I signed-up for Facebook because all of my friends encouraged me to do it. The whole experience only lasted for a day after all of those "what are you doing right now" posts started coming through. I really didn't care that my friends were washing their dog or watching Pretty Woman for the seventy-third time. Geez, it's like everybody wanted to be a reality TV star or something.

+1 on this! I get so tired of hearing people complain about the weather.

My partner and I also had a personal misunderstanding through something he posted on FB. It was not a pretty scene at our house that night, let me tell you! He is no longer on FB, and I have been staying away. I will more than likely make my FB page more of a motorcycle site, rather than a personal site.

About the only thing I like about Facebook is having reconnected with friends from Australia, and from my college days. I will keep them and the motorcycle buddies, but everyone else can go away!

Regarding twitter, I have made more motorcycle connections there than anywhere else (even here!). While I don't often have time to "tweet", when I do, I find I meet people and learn lots about the broader motorcycle industry, which is pretty cool.

I agree with Jim. 2 different animals with 2 different use groups. People who are not kawasaki riders and family members are not gonna be hangin out here & this place is better for it! I enjoy FB for all the old connections I've been able to make. Like JD we had a little mini gathering in Myrtle Beach last week & it was great! Had it not been for FB it never would have happened.

These forums are the best on the net & i've made some really great friends here & will continue to hang out here because of my love for motorcycles & the friends I've made. FB is great for my other friends & family but I do have all the games blocked. Don't care about that stuff.

I went on a ride recently with about 12 people who where mostly strangers to each other (it was a meetup ride). At lunch, 2 of the people spent most of the time texting, and one woman said barely a word while she posted to her blog!

It's like, "Yeah, I joined this group to meet people, so I can go on rides and ignore them while I blog for the benefit of people that I'll never meet. Totally awesome!"

I must be old, because I no longer get it.
Maybe real reality is just too much for some people?

I am like you, I don't get it either.
Isee people out for lunch or dinner, and they sit here on the phone with some other third party, or texting the whole time.
And there are so many things like faceless book and myspace its just amazing how few people really sit and visit any more.

I liked the olden days when friends really visited, and did activities together.

I prefer this site above and beyond what Facebook was, is, and ever will be. This forum has always been a great support network for me and I sincerely hope that this forum lives a whole lot longer than Facebook.

Just my humble opinion

exactly....why go riding and enjoy the outdoors if youre going to be a slave to your webpage, cell phone etc...i love riding and not having to talk on the phone...no one seems to know HOW to actually carry on a conversation...even if its about Fb, texting, or good riding

it drives me crazy when people do that. I have a group of friends that we all ride together regularly, one of the guys invited a guy he works with, not a problem all are welcome. We usually pick an evening after work, ride out for about an hour or so, stop grab something to eat and visit for a bit then head back, when we stopped for food the guy sat there and texted and played on facebook the entire time with his iPhone, we kept trying to include him in the conversation and get some response out of hiim to no avail, we agreed we would probably not invite him to ride again, but atleast the rest of us had fun like we always do.

I had a guy trying to sell me a bluetooth device to clip on my helmet so i can answer my phone when I ride. have we gotten that involved with our cell phones that we can't even enjoy riding our bikes without talking on the phone. Really sad.

I've been successful at ignoring FB, Myspace, Bluetooth, etc. Never even looked at the web stuff, can't imagine actually talking on the phone while riding.

Believe it or not, I'm still one of those folks who actually practices what he preaches, even in my pickup: if the phone rings, I let it ring. I pull off the road then call back if I feel like it. I won't even pick up the phone to see who's calling, it's too distracting. It took 5 years for me to be convinced that an MP3 is a good idea on a bike!

And as far as FB, etc. is concerned, I generally haven't liked most of the people I've met along the way, including some family members. Maybe I'm just getting grouchy as I age but why would I waste my time being fake friends with them now? Same applies with the texting fools on rides. I've been asked by a few when we were going to ride again and tell them we are riding, we just didn't invite you b/c your behavior sux. They seem shocked but too bad, we don't care. Checking your phone for messages and maybe calling back is one thing but constant texting and blogging at every stop and ignoring everyone is just rude and inconsiderate.

That's my $.02.

I'll leave facebook, myspace, etc. to the attention starved teens that feel they need to constantly "shout out" to their online friends.

I don't get texting on a phone either. I mean, it's a phone - you can actually talk to the party you want to communicate with. Modern technology - use it!

I do admit that texting does come in handy every so often, if it is a simple message like you would leave on the fridge - but not for back and forth conversation.

I also admit that some folks utilize social networking sites in a productive manner, and not like an attention starved teen looking for acceptance by society.

That's priceless. Every time I hear someone talking and they use a term from online chat it makes me want to slap them. Not to mention the fact that spelling is being slowly assassinated by technology. I have worked with 18-23yr olds that would lose to my 7 year old in a spelling bee. I am signed on to the boycott that was referred to earlier in the thread, never been on facebook or twitter. And for that matter, could twitter have picked any dorkier a name? I don't even like saying it around other grown men.
