We had a family website for a few years but many in the family found it too cumbersome to use their computer to communicate. All they had were there phones so they were able to play with Facebook, Twitter, and play games. They could do all these things while they were in class, in a restaurant, in the grocery store, at the dinner table, or even in church. Real writing is not required as you can abbreviate words and phrases to the point that hardly anyone can understand it. This now leaves conversation as the lowest form of communication.
Yes I join so I could keep up with some of the family goings on. Been on for a couple of weeks and it seems even less information is there.
I also refuse most invitations and do not play the games. The upshot is that if it makes them happy then fine. They'll be another fad or trend that will come along in a while.

I have no interest in doing FB or twitter. I have a MySpace page that gets checked about every 6 weeks or so - and that's just cuz our lead guitarist set up a MySpace page for the band.

The only network of that type I'm on is LiveJournal and that was to keep in touch with friends in another org.

Other than that, I mostly hang here

One thing about Facebook & Twitter, you can't do them while riding.
I cancelled my Twitter. Didn't have time for it, too much to do.
Facebook is great for my wife to meet all my old girlfriends & since I've been an instructor for 20 years, catching up on all my students is really cool.
And some of them have bikes now, so we've got another thing to check up on.
But farmville-NO. Cute, but it has to be for people who can't get out much. Good for them. Not for me.
Facebook & Linkedin are also business tools.
