Default Facebook is a Forum Killer

Man, I've been seein all you guys on Facebook and haven't been on these forums for awhile. Facebook is quite the social network but is no match for the knowledgeable people on these forums. I'll have to start visiting again more often. Ya'll have a good ride now!

Agreed, so many people are caught up in the "games" like Farmville. I don't get it!

I don't get the games, either. And I find the constant posts about people's game playing annoying, so I've blocked every game I've come across. It's nice that you can block the game and not the person playing it! I also ignore all the invitations and such that I get. I want to get in there and get out--fast--without being bothered with all that stuff.

I like FB because in just a minute or two, you can catch up on what all your peeps are doing. It takes a lot longer to sort through all the posts here. But the two sites are completely different animals, as you say, JD.

Julie, if you want, I'll sign up for Twitter and I can send you notes all day long about what I'm doing.

+1
Not a big fan of all the games. Wy do people keep sending me stuff for Mafia Wars? I'm not even sure what that is.

This is a much better place to hang out!

i miss the way facebook used to be. No apps, no extra crap. No little cousins or parents on it. But that's just the evolution of it i guess.

Exactly.

Forums are meant to be for searchable, long term information about a single subject, and elements related to it. They're generally meant to be a place for people that share an interest in that subject to post questions or answer them. Anything posted sticks around so others can find it easily.

They're not meant to be a place to really "catch up" with individuals. They're also meant to be anonymous as opposed to making it easy for people to located you.

Facebook and MySpace are meant to be about you and the people you want to know. Forums are about the subject matter, though the better ones do foster a sense of companionship among the members.

This forum is one of the few forums that has successfully had an "off topic" section, yet still been able to be friendly, yet helpful. Most other forums have to choose between helpful information and chaos.

I stay away from the social networking sites. I probably give away too much information already, I don't need to give away more. It's really not hard to find me, anyway. Plus, practically every month, there's a new exploit going on with those sites.

I'd rather take part in a forum dedicated to a particular subject I'm interested in that a site for idle chit chat.

My old college roommate and I have boycotted facebook. Not joining the cult

No reason not to other than I'm stubborn and proud and I've lasted this long, so I'm going to see this through

I enjoy Facebook. I don't care for the games, so I block those out, but I do like touching base with people I haven't seen in many years. I'm not looking to rekindle anything, but it's cool to hear how folks turned out. Also, I come from a very large family, and almost all of us are on FB. We can share news with the group very quickly, and everyone has equal opportunity to comment on things. Obviously, we are not discussing our latest biopsies or mammagrams, but pictures of the kids, news from vacations and things like that are fun to post up.

You all have valid points. I also hate all the games, invites, causes, and extra crap on Facebook. I do like the social aspect of it. Just this past 2-3 weeks, I hooked up with 5-6 of my old HS grad class. I haven't seen some of these people in 38 years and the others in 18 years. We ended up getting together for a mini-reunion, all because we were on Facebook, some only for a week. Now that is powerful. If it were not for Facebook, we would have never hooked up. So, I think each type of online environment has its' place for different reasons.

yup.

i don't see the point in the apps or games etc.

i have to constantly fiddle with my privacy settings because my 8-9 year old cousins want to be my friends... and what's with aunts, uncles and parents?!?!

i can't understand why anyone would have their parents on their facebook.
they'd see all your drunken night out photos....
they'd see all the stuff you talk about with your friends...

where's the fun in that??

I have many friends that live in other countries, and other areas where our time zones and schedules are just too crazy to ever interact via phone, so email and fb have become our means of communicating, but I too do not understand the games, I get hundreds of invites to start playing these crazy things, I just ignore them.
