Default Look both ways even if they guy ahead of you doesn't!

I just got back from a nice little ride in the Colorado canyons. I stopped at a little mountain dive bar to take a swig of H2O and snap a few pics of the scenery. As I was leaving, so was a couple that was out riding - he was on an HD (surprised it actually ran at that altitude), and she was on a Buell Blast.

As I was strapping on my helmet and getting my gloves on the HD guy pulled out of the parking lot, obviously without looking both ways and got smacked by a small car. The windshield went flying, the lady screamed, and the HD was stuck under the front bumper of the oncomng car. Fortunately, the guy was OK, and could ride on. I stayed behind to help him pick up his bike from the middle of the road, and to make sure he was alright, and in case he needed any help. They exchanged insurance info and all that, and then he was able to ride home. If not for all the metal on that big hunk-o-junk, that guy would have been a lot worse off.

    Moral of the story:
Look both ways before pulling out into the street - even if the guy/girl ahead of you does't!

Other that than, it was a gorgeous ride in the Rockies today!

    +1.

My instructor told us, and it always sticks with me, ride like you are invisible. You never know when the car you are looking at isn't going to be looking for you.

You stick with that thought and you will be alove more safe. I been using that advice since day one and so far no mishapes after riding almost 2 years now and 25k under my belt.

Actually, the safer approach in my opinion is to ride as if people are trying to get you from all angles. makes you real certain to stay out of blind spots and away from people turning into and out of traffic.

    1) Drive like cages are trying to kill you.
    2) Look 10-20 seconds ahead of you.
    3) Assume corners are covered in gravel.
    4) Assume your bike will stall at the worst possible time.

I was gettin to those, except I went to go unload the camera onto my PC, and found that several of the pics were missing. I guess I managed to take pics with some chick in tight pants in the frame and wifey didn't like that too much. Oopsie! Would have been one thing if I did it on purpose (really - I didn't, I swear!). Needless to say, she took the liberty of deleting those pics from the camera. Too bad - those were some of the better shots I think, and I coulda easily Photoshop'd her out of the shots.

Working on resizing the remaining pics so that they actually fit on normal monitors, and to have some mercy on dial-up users.

Even though my hubby is a great rider and has ridden for about 15 years. I know he guards me with his life when i'm riding with him. When he pulls out first i still stop and look before i pull out behind him.
    If I can't ride....then i'll just stay home!

Happens all the time- watched an old lady get broadsided in her cage last year: I was right behind her at a red light & 3rd in line. 1st cage makes right on red, old lady thinks it's ok to go & does. Whammo!!

I don't think Tina understands why I ride behind her all the time. I feel I can be of more help to her if I am behind her. if needed I can speed up to intercept someone doing something stupid or keep the stupid people off her rear tire. I'm not back there watching how she rides or trying to make her nervous, she rides just fine. I'm back there trying to help protect her, that's all.

and riding like everyone is out to kill you is the best way to stay safe in my book.
