Default Don't take the salesman at his word...

...when he tells you the tank is full before you ride off on your new ride. Bike sputtered and died at 75 miles and i'm scratching my head on the side of the road. I've never run anything out of gas before! Well a quick switch to RES and a few miles down to the nearest gas station and i'm good as new, The lesson: Make your first stop the gas station!

    RES is a wonderful thing.
When I ride, I think. When I am not riding, I still think but I am just thinking about riding...

Unlucky - looks like you got jipped.

When I picked up my bike, the guy told me straight up, there's a gas-station on the corner, fill her up coz she's only got enough gas to get there!

It's hard to tell from your avatar, what bike do you have?

    I'm amazed that a modern-day bike doesn't have a damn reserve light!

You're lucky! My roomate got his new bike a year or so ago (Yamaha cruiser), and they said they filled it up. A dozen miles down the road, it starts sputtering. He goes to flip to reserve, and wouldn't you know it, the idiots at the stealership already had it on reserve! He got a nice walk down to the nearest freeway exit to buy a gas can and some petrol.

my VN900 has the low fuel light. Mainly because we don't have a petcock on these bikes. It comes on with about 1 to 1.3 gallons left.

If you admit being a part-timer and a weekend hack like me, then there's no need to lie b/c you're not a "real" golfer who has to impress with the great score of 95 or the one putt from 6 feet or "OMG I hit a 7iron in the air 140 yds!!"

Never understood the reason behind a reserve tank. Why not just put the good old blinking light there when the tank is getting low. Or was this before that technology existed?

My dad plays in the 80s. And that's no lie. This coming from him, a golfer, and me, a golfer.

I picked up a bike today that I had at the dealer for maintenance, and part way home, it coughs and starts to stall, and I'm thinking -- "what did they do to my bike" . ha ha. then I remembered your post, and sure enough -- flipped on reserve and life was good again. it hadn't occurred to me to check since i had dropped off the bike with a full tank.

    live and learn !!

Did they have to drain your tank for some reason? I would expect them to refill it if they did.

And be sure to switch back to run when you fill up, or the next time you run out, you'll really run out! It's a common newbie mistake............
