The other day, I finally ran my VN750 long enough to warm the engine and engage the cooling fan. Trouble was I heard something whirring, but I saw that the blades weren't turning. I consulted my trusty VN750 repair manual, and saw the problem lay with the fan assembly. Because Kawasaki doesn't break the fan assembly into smaller parts, I thought I was going to be stuck buying the whole assembly for $460 (MSRP). I felt a little better when I found it on RonAyers.com for $361. Then I thought I could do a little better buying it used. I stumbled across RiderParts.com to search for used parts, and going that route, I got price quotes for $60, $90, and $100.

In the meantime, I removed the radiator cover and the radiator, and disconnected the fan assembly to see how bad it was. When the plastic blades fell off the spindle (or whatever it's called), I surmised that maybe an old epoxy job had given out.

To make sure it was just the blades, I connected the fan assembly to the wires that run to the horn (the connectors are the same). I honked the horn, and sure enough, everything (minus the plastic blades) worked fine.

I gave up the search for a fan assembly, choosing instead to replace the blades. I found aluminum blades on muzzy.com. Just $50 (includes s&h). Sure beats $460!
