The best thing is to assume that everybody else on the road is nuts and out to get you.

Beware of the cars and trucks that are stopped, facing you, with their left hand blinkers going. They are most likely not to see YOU but see everybody else.

Also watch their front wheels, if they are already turned to the left they could get rear ended and that would push them right into your path.

Fear is ones survival mechanism

Remove some fear and you can turn better, harder and faster... remove too much fear and we as people will do incredibly stupid things and die.

I know I will probably get some flames for this one but bottom line, bikes are hard to see. I ride during daylight hours only with my high beams on and only goto low beams during evening and night riding. I have seen amazing results in cagers actually seeing me after doing this. That would be my #1 recommendation.

Default Use yer hands to signal

To many times I see riders forgetting to turn off those damn signal lights. Used to do it myself quite often thats why I now use hand signals except at night, rainy or foggy days. Cruise on!

That's what I was going to say.

You CAN ride to a bar, and NOT drink! I go all the time, and the hardest thing I drink is Diet Coke. My buddies also. I won't ride with people that drink and ride. The last thing I need is to get hit by the drunk driver I'm with.

Thanks, it was at that point that I gave up the massive monster horsepowr rides for the more sedate slower ones. It's amazing how dramatically the loss of a loved one or close friend can change your whole attitude. My last ride was a massive custom built from the ground up 150bhp at the rear axle cruiser and was scary to say the least.

if you really want to go fast then prepare for the lights and sirens and make sure your donor card is up to date.

Anticipate the actions others. And at the least check your tires before riding.

The safest way is not to ride at all!
But that's not an option.

Learn a good technique to pick your bike up. You'll probably drop it at least once, and you'll want to put at much space between you and the people who saw you drop it as fast as you can. Also, a FF helmet will hide your blushing

+1, Just dropped my less than a week old bike in the driveway. But even worse is I know how to pick it up. Too much practice.

When you lose the fear...LOSE the bike!

Fear is a good thing but don't let it dictate your ride.

Share the road...share the responsibility.

These are some things I was told many many years ago.

Just when you think you've had enough close calls that you should be OK for the rest of the ride, remember that the deer, raccoons and rest of the people on the road don't care how many close calls you've had...

I registered just to contribute here... The following is what I remember before and during each ride:

1 - "There are only two types of riders: Those who have crashed and those who will" -- I'll eventually have to find a replacement for this phrase, but I'm prepared for it.

2 - Just as I was getting ready for my first ride ever, my mother told me: "Think about your daughter every time you get on that thing. Nobody will lose more than her if something happens to you"
