Question Experienced Rider Course

What do people think about the experienced rider course offered by msf? I'm pretty sure I'm gonna take it, and I'm trying to get people here at work to take it with me (to save us all $15) but no one seems interested. Is it worth the $85 for me to take it alone?

I took it through my base (lackland afb) for free. I enjoyed it. Teaches you how to control your bike more by shifting your weight than by using your hands. Not sure if I'd pay $85 for it, cause I'm a cheap military *******, but thats me

Over here, I hear the experienced riders course is basically the MSF course, but instead of the Honda 250's and such, you use you own bike. Lots of folks like the regular msf course since the u-turns and stuff is easier using the smaller bikes.

I personally think the esperienced riders' course has value - you can always learn something extra.

When I blew through the basic course I always thought I wanted to take it. But I doubt I will. I'll prolly spend about $300 and take a good racing school. I'll learn more advanced riding and it will apply a lot more to my style.

It's only $55 here. Geesh! One of my friends who's an MSF instructor has arranged to teach it for my motorcycle club. We get a special price of $45, so hubby and I are both taking it. From what she told me, a lot of the skills are the same, but there are a few things that are different from the beginner course, like doing the swerves with one hand (that sounds like fun). The box for the figure 8 is bigger, too, since most people's bikes are longer than the little 125s.

If you can set up a course somehow and practice those skills on your own, then you don't need to spend the money. But it's easier for me to do the course with an instructor who knows what she's doing and to have everything laid out for me. I've done some practicing in an empty parking lot, but it's not the same.

Julie: did you learn any more than the Palladino video on slow speed turns using combinations of clutch friction zone and rear brake application?

Wow, if it costs more than $300 to take the advanced course its not worth it. Even if you ride a cruiser go take a better class. You can go to one of Keith Codes classes for about $250. They even have full dress Gold Wings go through some of his classes. You'll learn a lot more than what they'll teach you at any advanced MSF course.

never even heard of it around here. the basic one is at least $300, so if there is an advanced one, it is probably around the same. for that money, i too would go for the racing classes

Man, I am so glad that the MSF classes are only $20.00 in Illinois. I just signed up for the ERC, and they even offer it in one of my workplace's parking lots!!

Just seeing this thread made me curious, so I called up and learned that a Harley club had scheduled a class near me for Mar 26th. It was only $75, which is a bargain compared to learning to walk with a cane or starring in a nice funeral. After 250,000+ miles of riding, I'll bet there's still junk to learn.
So I'll wear this suit with this bike and earn that 'spect from my Hog classmates-yo!

I haven't taken the class yet, T-man, but when I do I'll let you know.

ERC taught me a few things, as my slow speed skills were poor.

Nice to see you here, w650rider. That's exactly why I'm taking the ERC--to improve my slow-speed skills. Yes, I can go out in a parking lot and practice by myself. But the instructor who's teaching the class I'm taking taught my beginning rider course, and she was really great at pointing out things you do wrong and giving you tips to correct them. It makes a big difference for me to have someone watching what I'm doing, then offering constructive criticism. I feel extremely comfortable riding my bike, but I want to be able to handle figure 8s and tight turns without hesitation.

I heard that they couldn't find a reason to have one in your state. That if a rider could dodge all the potholes, survive riding through all the construction sites, and didn't get killled enroute by radical drivers, that there just wasn't anything else to teach !!!!!! In other words, every rider that could make it to the training site was ALREADY an expert !!! LOL

I'd never take those kind of courses again. My bike was an 80 honda twinstar with NO REAR BRAKE and a front brake the would lock up if you used more than 1/8th of the lever.
