Default Hot Bike

I learned that my ZZR gets really hot in stop and go traffic today. The temperature light comes on at about 245 degrees, and my right leg starts sweating like crazy

Is your fan coming on? If not, check the fan's fuse, and if it's good, the fan temperature switch may be bad.
Also check your coolant level... if the bike is more than a couple of years old, it should probably be changed.
Thermostat sticking closed... but that would cause overheating under pretty much all conditions.

The fan should be adequate to keep the engine cool in anything but the most extreme desert temperatures.

The bike is brand new, I only have about 800 miles on it so far. And it wasn't overheating, I was just complaining about the weather. Here in Seattle if it gets over about 80 degrees we start whining, and it's been in the 90's the last couple days

Is the temp light coming on, or is the blast from the fan just burning your leg?

If the light is coming on, that's not good.

The light was on for less than a minute before my bike started cooling down again. As far as I could tell the fan kicked on at ~220 like it should, and was running the entire time.

And the whole thing about my leg was just a joke about how hot the pipe gets.

What's all this talk about "fans" on a bike? Are you talking about people who really like the bike? And coolant? Where's that go?

i havent seen over 225 on my new ZX-6. but when that fan kicks on you can hear it! i havent been that high on the temp since ive been riding on the road though...keep the speed up man! get some airflow over that radiator! LOL

its been rather cool and comfortable in Mississippi lately. normally it starts to swelter around this time. you guys can keep the heat though...id rather it be nice and cool and when it does get cooler my underseat exhaust will keep my rear-end warm!

It's usually (last couple of weeks) over 110° out when I'm riding home in traffic (stop light to stop light), and I've never hit 220°. I'd freak out if it got up to 248°. that's hot. In the mornings it's 90+ out, and my temp runs in the low 190's.
I'd make sure your fan is working. If it's getting that hot, the fan should be running when you shut the bike off.

my .02 cents.

i wish my temp gauge was working agian... another part i need to replace...
somtimes i cant belive how hot my leg gets when the fan kicks on, even when the bike is running under 200 Degrees. Whats that coolant that is susposed to work the best and keep running temps down? somthing with the word wet or wetter in it. i know its like 25$ for a gallon but i hear it works great

It's that annoying mass of stopped or at-crawling-speed cagers and trucks that us Californians thread through as we split lanes.

Despite how the low angle looked, he wasn't really flying past the cars, but was going faster than I'd be comfortable going.

It amazes me that noone switched lanes and totally screwed him. It seems around dc va and maryland noone is ever comfortable in their lane for more than 20 secs before they just have to change lanes.

I used to lane split all the time in CA. It was one of the selling points of getting the bike. I lived in the SF Bay Area where people regularly commuted over bridges to get to work. There was almost always traffic during rush hour. It wasn't stop-and-go traffic...it was more like stop-and-stop. I remember my commute going from 58 minutes to 32 minutes just by riding the bike.

Of course, now I live in AZ where it is not allowed. So here I get to sit on my bike and bake in the heat...
