Last night on the way home from riding i was having problems with the bike not going when i turned the throttle. I spent the night reading forums about what could be wrong
. I thought i was gonna have to learn about carburetors a little early than i had anticipated.Today i was having a hard time getting her started, so i called the dealership to complain . The guy told me it sounded like i was outta gas. I thought since i just bought the bike and only put a little over 100mi on it there was no way. I also don't consider myself to be stupid enough to not notice a empty tank of gas. Well apparently i am |

my dealership put about a gallon in so they could do the test ride. as soon as i got back into town i filled her up...been runnin' on that tank since, but im getting close to needing gas im sure. ill fill her up this weekend (passed on filling it up today because the station i normally go to was getting their tanks filled...kickin' up the sludge on the bottom!)
i havent hit my fuel light yet though...and im gonna make sure i dont! i dont wanna run outta gas!

id recomend keeping your tank full at all times, after each ride fill it back up. It keeps your gas tank from rusting. and running out of gas from happening lol.
I got my carbs redone on my bike a few months ago but when i brought it in i filled the tank up, got the bike back and rode it about 40 miles then ran out of gas... at first i thought OMG they messed my carbs up or somthing cause its not running any more. I was about to call the dealership and stir up a $h%t storm when my girlfreind called me and said "your probably just out of gas" and wouldnt you know it.... i was. it was embarrassing because every biker who passed me had to stop and see if everything was all right (which made me feel really good that people were stopping and checking if i was ok) but then having to explain i ran out of gas was kinda lame lol

the good news is - they must get a lot of those calls, if they can diagnose your problem Over the Phone

haha...; but seriously... I dropped my bike off at the dealer(about 30miles away)about 2 wks ago for some work(new water pump & cam chain tensioner)and it was FULL when I dropped it off....on the way home last Saturday, I sputtered at reserve in the middle of the George Massey Tunnel(which goes UNDER the Fraser River) and coasted to just outside to the emergency turn off. lol I guess they drained it out, and didn't put too much back in. Even after 25 yrs of riding, duh, you better still check the tank before you hit the highway!
So don't feel too bad....it happens to everyone ride safe.... |

When I bought my 500 the dealership was incredibly generous. They gave me just enough gas to get home, practice in a parking lot for a couple minutes, and then get on to the freeway when I was feeling more comfortable. Unfortunately, they weren't generous enough to give me enough gas to also get off of the freeway
When I bought my 600 (from the same dealership) the first stop was a gas station about a block from the dealership. |

well... at least the dealership has smart troubleshooters... they could have said bring it in and done a bunch of "tests" on it instead. LoL

Yeah, they don't even fill the tank with a U-Haul anymore - even though you have to bring it back with the same amount or they charge you for the difference.
The guy I bought my bike from specifically told me it was down to about a half a tank since he had run it around a bit when he pulled it out of winter storage. He told me to ignore the trip reading for this tank full since he had idled it more than usual while preparing it for riding - as a result, more gas was used than what the tripometer indicated mileage-wise.
