Default I counter steer when putting it on the side stand...

So I've been thinking about counter steering a lot lately and I realized something today. My natural motion after putting the side stand down to get off the bike is to move the handle bars to the right (push left) and initiate the lean left to lower it to the side stand. This is a counter steer. Push left, go left. I'd never realized I did this before, but I think I do it because the bike wants to fall left, so it takes less effort to put it on its stand.

This is exactly what we do when counter steering into a turn, only while not moving.

I found the wikipedia article on the subject enlightening.

countersteering is basically "tripping" the bike as i think of it. when you turn the bars, the bike trips over the front wheel and you catch it by correcting.

Yes at 6mph+ you countersteer...below that you steer by turning where you want to go...
