I thought about you the other day. I showed up to go on a group ride and one one of the ladies on a trike said that I'd burn up, seeing me in my gear. I told her that was alright with me, I'd rather wear my gear than have my skin torn off. Along the way, I dropped my bike going around a turn at a stop sign when I wasn't agressive enough on the throttle to keep the engine running. A couple of us picked up my bike and we all resumed our ride. Later, that lady came up to me and said my point was proven.
Aww, shucks Obsidian. You make me feel all....BLECCH!

Glad you came out okay. Sorry that you had to prove your point that way! I'm also glad to hear about another rider living by ATGATT.

BTW, I did a little investigation on the broken bone because of what CTRider said, and he's right! The armor is hard and inflexible, and creates pressure points. One of those points happened to be on the ulna, and guess what happened at the pressure point?

Just a thought, would it be possible to post this thread as a sticky somewhere?

Does it meet the requirements, etc?

Probably not. It's one of those "if it's of real interest, the posts will keep it at the top" type of threads.

On the other hand, if you bought a couple dozen mesh and textile jackets, put each of them on a crash test dummy, launched it off the back of your pickup and recorded the results of each one, then you'd have a thread worthy of a sticky. That would be some awesome info.

Of course, you'd have to do some control testing both without any protection, with denim and with several popular leather garments, as well, in order to compare.

Otherwise, a really helpful sticky thread would be one full of testimonials from people citing how they faired with various brands and models of gear.

That's the problem with amour.

It's meant to take the blow when you land in a way that is common, not when getting body slammed by your better half. Your wreck wasn't typical for most riders - in fact, it's in that 1-2% category.

When the jacket was designed, it was expected you'd probably either low side or t-bone a guy who turns in your path.

On the other hand, this might add a new category for testing: the WWR rating, as in, the Wife's Weight Resistance Rating...

LOL!

Um, what if there's two dudes on a bike? Or what if the wife is doing the riding while the hubby is a passenger?

Good point about the testing. I myself would not want to do that because a.) My Dodge Ram has a thirsty 360 under the hood and b.) no one's giving me donations to do the testing LOL.

Although if anyone wants to donate.......J/K!

thats why i like it when whoever is riding on the back is close to me, so i can feel where they are at all times, just a thought. it might get uncomfortable for them but i hate it when i can't feel my passenger holding on tight. unless i specify that i will be taking it easy. Very glad you and your wife are okay. I would hate getting her hurt more than myself personally.

See, that's the thing, before we began turning she was holding tight to me - so tight that she landed right on top of me when we came off the motorcycle.

I definitely agree though, I'm glad she's more mobile than I. and she's recovered about 90% now.

just saw this in your signature.
Glad to hear you weren't seriously hurt, and glad to hear that you've always got the gear on.

It's also good that your wife wants to get back on the bike too.

ride safe and tell her to sit still

Proud to be a poser
it's just a little embarassing taking 2 minutes to get off the bike, remove my gloves and remove my FF helmet, then wipe the few beads of sweat from my forehead

i'm just glad the weather here in London doesn't get as hot as some of the places you guys in the US live!! I've got a nice mesh fully armoured jacket for the 'hot' days. I'm fully armoured up all the time. Don't have any leather though, textiles all the way at the moment... Maybe i'll get leathers when i get the sportsbike.

ride safe

Lost in all the dribble about text/mesh vs hide, armor/ no armor ...

is the fact that the op did something dumb - ie a U turn, two up, in front of approaching traffic.

Lost control, for no good reason. No mention of adverse weather conditons, pavement, gravel etc.

"...my bike went down..."

That's it, his bike just 'went down' - cuz you know bikes just do that from time to time. Like the wind and tides, just something that happens.

'What I learned today' ?

Not much apparently. One reason MY insurance is so high.

What did I learn that day?

I learned the value of safety gear. My first thought, when I stopped sliding, was, 'Thank God I was wearing the safety gear.'

What did I learn a month later? That I was exercising improper clutch control and that's what's been causing my bike to wheelie from time to time.

What did I learn today, on September 6th, 2008? That you, kookooAchew, might have more experience on a motorcycle than I do, but you certainly seem to know less about being a rider than I do. Yes, I made a mistake. Yes, I screwed up. HOWEVER, that said, one thing I will NEVER do is kick dirt in a man's face when he falls down, even if it's because he screws up. You didn't even have the courtesy to address me personally.

You screwed up that day, just like all of us have lots of times.

Do not pay any attention to the few that will bash you for crashing.

His day will come as he eats crow after crashing, because he screwed up.
It will happen, we all go down eventually.

Just glad your okay is all, and the wife to.

This place is one of the most friendly forums I have ever seen, and still the odd idiot goes and trashes people for no reason.

Glad you took the high road and did not trash back.

My guess is the newbie will soon **** off the wrong person, and find they are BANNED.

Till then, keep your chin up, and keep posting....oh and congrats on the new cruiser your buying....should be a lot of fun.

Thanks guys, I'll definitely post up pics when I get one. I'll be another odd rider out - riding a non-Kawi bike, but still sticking around here

Well, I pm'ed the person to ask him why his first post was to basically be a troll, in essence (not quite my word but that's his/her intent).

Glad to hear you're OK. We ALL will go down at some point, so F*&& that guy for bashing. Besides he's probably one of those riders that wears shorts and a t-shirt while splitting lanes at 70mph
