This is probably a rare occurance, but one to be aware of none the less. My brother was passing a motorcyclist and shot him a wave - the guy looked over and returned the wave and a nod as he passed - a second later my brother heard the guy lock 'em up - release - and lock 'em up again. My brother looked back and noticed the guy very nearly rear ended a car that had slowed in front of him while he was exchanging the wave and a nod. So, be careful and keep an eye on the road ahead of you.

Happened on a forum ride.
The group had just turned a corner and a blue Gixxer was approaching. Rider was waving at all of us and didn't see the car stopped at the red light. BANG!

Time and place for waves....turns, takeoffs, intersections, shifting, brakeing, just to name a few places I don't return or give a wave...maybe a head nod.

in a turn or blind corner I usually wave I prefer both hands on the bars while I am manuvering... also screw the 2 second space they recommend, I religiously keep a 4 second space cushion in good weather and increase it as I feel needed... I may get to my destination a couple minutes later but at least im alive and have all my body parts...

Right on, man!
Always ride ahead of your machine! The "brotherhood" wave is an acknowledgement of our exposure to the risk of riding "almost naked" out there.... We are exposed to the danger of the car folks who might be eating a burger, smoking somthin', talking on the phone, "rockin' out" or just not paying attention. It is foolish indeed to not be aware of the risk. Ride on, be safe, enjoy! |

I was taking my first ride out on a road, (droping my bike off for inspection) and I passed my first biker EVER! He waved at me, and all I could do was flip a few fingers up off the bar, because I was to afraid to take my hand off the bars. I felt bad, but I nodded my head as well.
**Just to paint you a picture** This was literally one of the 1st miles I have ever rode on my bike. I have never sat on a bike before this. |

Glad someone brought this up... if you read the thread on "waving at scooters", a lot of people seem insulted if they don't get the wave, but there are times it doesn't make sense. Everyone is quick to say "stay safe, or rubber side down, or shiny side up"... then take their hands of the bars in a turn with gravel on the road, at the crest of a hill approaching a blind intersection, just to wave to the guy they told to keep it shiny side up!!! LOL

Paint and chrome up, rubber down. Meening to keep the bike rolling upright rather than sliding on it's side. Don't crash.
And welcome.

That is a very good observation. There have been times that I was turning and received the wave and nod. I have learned that I will wave and/or nod without checking to see if the other person did/didn't. So long as I know that I followed the "club rule" then I'm ok.

if i cant wave i nod, and maybe give a peace sign from my left bar (i always have 2 fingers covering my clutch anyways so its no big deal). i only wave when safe!
its more important to watch out for yourself first, then wave if you can. ive waved at people before and not gotten a wave back, and thats ok because i know there are more important things than waving! safety first.

I take care of ME out there, and although I like to acknowledge a wave if can, safety comes first as far as I'm concerned. If I'm too busy navigating to wave, I'll usually nod, but if I don't even have the time to nod, I simply ignore it, with hopes that the opposing biker understands. It's happened that I have waved and got nothing in return from either a fellow biker who is being safe and rather navigate his bike safely, or from some a-hole who most likely isn't riding a metric. Either way, I would stop and help a waver or a non waver if they were stranded on the side of the road. That to me is more important than an acknowledged wave, and shows true brotherhood in my book.

I had never realized how much of car drivers are assholes to bikers until i started riding myself. Makes a whole new perspective on the other side riding a bike now, not that i was ever one of those assholes, i give much respect to bikers even before i started to ride myself. I'm still a new rider, no close calls yet but notice many many many cars tail gate me even when i drive a little over the speed limit on the right lane, they must thing im gonna rocket off to 100mph or something like in movies. i HATE tail gaters.

Since I have started riding my motorcycle I have noticed alot of people will cut you off on your motorcycle, because its no danger to them. It's never happened to me, but when I'm in my car, I see people pull out on motorcycles all the time.
I actually makes me really angry. I start screaming and cussing and holding on my horn. I can't believe some people have driver's licenses. It blows my mind... |
