Smile Grass is slippery when wet!

So here is the setup : two lanes each way road with grass divider. On the sides, more grass with a ditch after it. The two sides are at different levels, so there is a slight incline between them. I have to do a U Turn left down the incline. It has been raining last night. Pavement moist, grass worst...

Start the U Turn left, good speed, etc... at this point the skills training says to turn your head and look at your exit point right? Well, I fixate on how wet the grass looks on the other side of the turn, and the huge ditch that follows, and guess where the bike is headed... right into the grass.

As I hit the grass the slide starts. I don't quite crash, more like flops onto my left foot (low side). I have the presence to kill switch, and then pull my foot out. No harm done, other than some friends that were following me on a cage and witnessed the whole embarrassing moment.

As we get going I realize the shifter is bent in. Shifting is ok, just the lever moved in. I also notice a small pain on my left foot every time I shift. Seems the shifter came down on my big toe. THANK GOD FOR RIDING BOOTS. The shifter I got straight, the toe is black and will be sore for a few days. Not bad. Lesson learned (I hope).

The rest of the ride went great, besides the pain on my toe.

I would think the lesson was not to do U turns in the median, but whatever works for you.

I didn't u turn on the median, I u turned on pavement. The grass was on the sides, not in the middle divide.

I learned as a small child about wet grass and rubber tires on my bicycle.

Locked up the back brake while going down a slope; immediately did a true low side crash as the bike swapped orientation on two planes: front to back and side to side. Wound up on the downhill side of the bike upside down.

Scared the crap outta me.

Fast forward four decades later, and wouldn't you know it - in order to get to my parking spot for Ruby each night, I have to go across about a 1/2 acre of grass. Dry or wet. With a sidehill to go across, no less.

And in the words of Elmer Fudd: I'm werry, werry care-fwul.....
