Really? It seemed like water got through mine last week. They're starting to age a bit, so I was thinking of getting one of those water proof treatments and trying that.

On my old work boots, I always used a spray on silicone material to waterproof the unpolished leather. It kept the nappy look, yet water would bead on it. It had to be reapplied every few times out in the wet, though. It would also slightly darken the leather - not much, but it was noticeable. The color went from tan to light brown. It actually helped make clean-up easier when they were caked with mud. It's been a while, but I think it was this stuff:
Amazon.com: Sno-Seal Silicone Water Guard Aerosol Spray: Apparel This appears to be pretty much the same thing: Atsko Waterproofing Stain Repellent Silicone Spray Seams on boots and tents were always best combatted by Kenyon's Seam Sealer (now in version 3): Seam Sealer 3-2 oz. from Campmor The above stuff got me through 8 years of camping in the boy scouts. I never had a single leak in my tent and my feet were always warm and dry. Last edited by CTRider : 08-12-2008 at 01:53 PM. |

You're right... and nothing is much worse than wet feet. I was lucky enough to get a pair of genuine CDN military issue Gore-tex wet weather combat boots from a buddy with the same size feet... I've been soaked to the bone before but when you're feet are dry it doesn't seem as bad!!!

I'd rather be tacky than wet!

When I was in the USAF all I had to get around in San Francicso was an old 350 Honda. To keep my feet dry when it rained I'd get the sandwich size baggies, double them up,put on my socks, boots and stay dry all day.

Yeah it would but I've been known to use the plastic bag trick in long torrential downpours. Take your boot off, put foot in a walmart plastic bag, then put bagged foot in boot. It works! I have 4 bags rubber-banded to my rain gear all the time.

If your feet get wet enough for the glue to start to fail on the boots, you might be tacky even without the bags...
That's the one thing I learned pretty quick when camping in freezing winter temperatures: it doesn't matter what you look like if you're warm and dry. |
