Alabama bike license

Hi there everyone. I know Alabama has some of the most lax motorcycle laws around, but I was wondering if anyone knows if there was a time that they just gave you the M classification on your license if you said you wanted it. I have a lot of friends my age that never took a test. They were just asked if they wanted the M on their license.

I believe all that's required is passing the written portion of the drivers test. That being said, I got my motorcycle license at the age of 14, in 1970, by taking (and passing) the written test. In all the following years, I've had my driver's license transferred to California back to Alabama and then to Nevada and finally back to Alabama. I was never questioned and the rating was transferred without question so, at least those states respected the rating.

I've had motorcycles off and on since I was 14 and never had to prove to any authority that I could even stay upright on one. In retrospect, it does sort of make you wonder.
