Overheating going up hills????

I have a 1996 Vulcan vn1500d classic and for some reason when I am going up long hills it seems to overheat and run like **** before I get to the top.. Why is this happening??? Could it be the carb not adjusted right? I think it is running way too rich because I noticed a power loss after having the carburetor rebuilt and you can smell the exhaust at an idol. Anyone have any ideas as to what it could be???

1. How many miles on it?
2. How long have you owned?
3. Why did you have the carb rebuilt and who did it?

Maybe flush cooling system. Also adjust the idle mixture screws.

When you're "overheating", is the light in the dash coming on? Is it blowing coolant out of the overflow? Boiling? Or, is this a matter of it "feeling hot" and then running poorly by time you get up the hill, and no boiling/puking/etc?
