1986 600 Ninja with weak spark

I have an '86 600 with a weak spark condition. It is weak enough that it doesn't even try to start. I have measured the resistance on the primary and secondary side of the coils and everything looks normal. I checked/cleaned the pickup coil and replaced the spark plugs. The battery voltage is good and the the engine turns over freely.

Im looking at the IC Igniter as the culprit but I dont know a lot about it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

99% of the time in a case like this the battery is the culprit.
It may be able to turn the engine but lacks enough juice to properly fire the plugs resulting in a weak spark.

Battery age? Load tested?

At least 13.0 volts?

To make it go faster I need to add more lightness!

Its got a new battery and I even had the charger on it.

I really dont think that its a battery issue but I will investigate it further.

check the ends of your plug wires. if they're corroded, and on such an old bike this is possible, they'll give weak spark. you can clip about 1/4" off each wire end to clean up the connection real good, and it'll work great again.

The spark plug boot just threads onto the wire correct?

i had a similar problem on my 86 gpz600r the (new) coils measured fine for resistance but the bike kept dropping onto two pots. Replaced both coils with different ones. everything fine.

They may read ok when the bike isn't running but any load on the coils could be enough to kill them.

Thanks for the info. Now I don't seem to be getting any spark at the plugs so I'm going to have to go back to square one and check everything again.
