I've done this kind of conversion on cars, but not on bikes. Why is a relay is needed to power the coils in this instance?

Because voltage drop occurs when the coils are powered through a roundabout 35+ year old ignition circuit. Same theory applies when your powering the headlights of a 1972 Chevy...Instead of powering through an aged circuit with old wires and contacts, the coil mod supplies 12+ volts directly from the battery via a relay installed...Find me on Facebook and I'll supply you with current diagrams and explanations free of charge...~Ghostrider~ https://www.facebook.com/michael.hill.12979

kylehorn09 - just curious - you started this thread with the 4 post GM module but actually used the Cavalier igniter requiring a bunch of mods. Why not use the 4 post Wells part# 6H1013 and double coil Wells part# 5C1058 to get the bare parts?

The reason the Cavalier igniter was used was because it packages so much nicer and cleaner than just custom mounting them somewhere. It's pretty simple, you just tear the guts out of the cavalier igniter and wire it like the pictures show a few posts up. Also, the 4 post igniters were used. they were used to in conjunction with the double coils and cavalier igniter. The cavalier igniter just served as a rack to mount the coils.

+1 To zoro on the explanation for the relay powering the coils.
