I've recently acquired this F6 and the wiring on it has been screwed with by a previous owner. Each wire in the harness has been cut near the back of the bike and has been spliced with nothing but tape. It looks like someone has grafted in a harness from a similar (but different) model bike (difference because I have wires in the harness that don't match diagrams I've found for this bike. more on this later)

My first issue is there's a CDI module (photo of CDI available if needed) on my F6 that is not mentioned in any of the wiring diagrams (see photo below) and parts schematics I've found online for F6's. There are 7 wires on my CDI, but none of them were connected to the bike. The three output wires (green/black, green/black, and black) exit the CDI unit, enter a separate three wire harness and then just end underneath the fuel tank (they appear to be cut.) The ignition coil has no open terminals or anywhere to connect the CDI. So... Question 1: Is this bike supposed to have a CDI unit?

What makes me think this harness has been replaced or tampered with is that the 6 pin connector (see photo below) for the ignition switch has wires on either side of the connection that are different colours... on the ignition switch side, one of the wires is pink, but at the same place on the harness side, it is blue with a white stripe. Question 2: Is it normal, or has it been screwed with?

Everything about my bike's wiring matches this diagram (again, see below). Except for the presence of the CDI unit, and the other difference being that the pink wiring in the diagram running between the bullet terminals of the magneto to the ignition switch is blue/white on my bike. Question 3: Can I run the bike without the CDI?

While I've got you here I have some other questions;
-What is the green/yellow wire on the magneto for? It doesn't seem to connect anywhere on my bike, and in the diagram it shows a dotted line going to a sky-blue coloured wire. Thoughts?
-I've noticed from diagrams that there are three coils in the stator; a main coil to charge the battery, and two others for running lights at night time. Assuming the main coil ends up being faulty, can I use one of the other lighting coils in place of the main coil? Bearing in mind the bike would never be night-driven (no need for high beams) and it doesn't currently have turn signals or gauges right now... but if I installed lamps in the future, they would be LED so current draw would be low.
-I've found a run-of-the-mill 6V 4.5A/h lead acid battery from my local electronics supply... is this fine to run on this bike, or does the battery I use have to be a 'motorcycle battery', specifically designed for this application?

Any help and info is appreciated, thanks in advance

I don't know anything about your F6 or 2-strokes. There are several NOS
main wiring harnesses on EB. I did not search for the smaller sub-harnesses >>
listed in the diagrams at Partzilla for the 1971 F6. EB >> Kawasaki F6 wiring harness

For the ignition youtube videos should be helpful. I only looked at the one linked below. The partzilla diagrams are showing a points ignition system. I don't know if a "CDI" can be used.

Thanks, that video was very helpful. I've seen some of his other videos. There's no way this bike is supposed to have a capacitor discharge ignition, I don't know why one was installed. Oh well...

Someone may have installed the electronic ignition from a later model >> probably from an 80s Kawasaki 125 of some type or another; or from a similar sized Kaw. I don't know if what you have is actually a CDI & I don't know if any of the Kaw 2-stroke ignitions are the type >> it's pretty common for the term to be misapplied & I don't know enough about it to say one way or the other. hee.

I've since got the bike running without that box. Not sure why it was in there to begin with. And actually the only way I knew what it was because it said C. D. Ignition unit on it. Didn't even know what that was until I looked it up lol
