I have a 79 KE100, it runs perfectly for about 5 miles, then, when I'm going through the gears, it sputters and backfires like crazy. Once I'm at a pretty high and constant RPM, it runs fine. I just cleaned out the carb, so it can't be that. Once when it was doing this, I put a new spark plug in it and it helped out for like a 1/4 mile then it went back to backfiring and burping. I let it cool off and it runs fine. I never have a problem starting it, one kick all the time. I don't want to buy a coil unless I know it's definitely that because those aren't cheap. It only has 940 miles on it. So what do you think?

1979 KE100 I have the same darn problem. I have done all I know to do including carburetor cleaning and repair kit, fuel tank cleaning, new fuel line with small filter, points, spark plug lead end, ohm check exciter coil, primary coil, set timing as best I could all work performed using a factory manual. Crank seals??? Please help me solve my dilema. Thanks for any input, John.

Hi Rick, tagging onto the end of an old thread (2015) may seem like a good idea, but normally the posters have long since moved on and unfortunately many posters don't bother to post their solutions.

Your best bet is to start a brand new thread and provide as much detail as possible about your exact problems and what you have tried so far, and then we can try to help you. Don't forget to provide the exact model, year and mileage of your bike. Cheers!

i have the same problem with my 79 ke100 and i think its the coil but i dont want to spend money of its not going to work
Start by cleaning the points ,, then prooerly adjust them .... Coill is suspect . Mine developed an internal short that finally worked itself out to the plastic cover ... Check that ....
I sure miss mine , Bought it , off the floor ....
