Replaced the boots on the air intake and the engine for the carburator. Reinstalled carb, fuel line, and vacuum line. Engine turns over with lots of battery life but takes forever to catch. Almost runs the battery down by the time it starts. Have I missed a step? Could the spark plugs be spoiled with the changing of the carb?

Sounds like mine when I 1st got it home. Replaced the plugs and it starts on the first try. OK OK sometimes 2nd try

STARTING

Spark plugs are usually the cause...But you should be using the choke if only for a few seconds to start the bike...then after returning the choke to the OFF position wrapping it once or twice to clear the excess gas. Don't toss your plugs, except into white vinegar overnight to clean them. then you will have a spare set.
