I just purchased a 86 Bayou 4 wheeler. It idles fine, and if you just give it a LITTLE gas it will rev up a little. But if you give it anything over 1/4 throttle, it acts like its hitting a rev limiter... It pops, backfires... Its not the carb. It has been rebuilt and everything in in good shape there. The coil has been replaced, the spark plug has been replaced, and the previous owner said he replaced the CDI box and that didnt help either. So, im assuming its the pickup coil, or possibly the stator?? I tested both as it told me to in the manual. Both tested fine, but that was with the engine off. It idles fine, so im not suprised that they tested good with the engine off. Is there any way to test them with it running? Does this sound like a bad pickup coil, or stator?? Any help would be appreciated!!! THANKS

Update

Well, I just went out and replaced my ignitor with a GM Hei contol module. Now, the engine still sputters/pops at any throttle over 1/4, but if you hold it at full throttle, it will stutter/pop for a while and then rev up and act like its suppose to... But if you let the rpms fall back down then you have to hold it at full throttle for a bit and it will rev back up again... Any ideas??

if ya ever get this figured out let me know [email protected] cause i have a 94 220 in my garage that is doing the EXACT same thing. hell im a bike tech and i cant figure this one out. in my case the PO scratched the flywheel all up so when i put the new timing chain on i had to kinda guess where the TDC mark was. im 99.9% sure i have it correct but not a 100%.

wires?????????//

I have a klf 300 as well, and am having a problem at the top end. It seems to be fine in the right gear, and not at 1/4 throttle. My manual is on the way, but I will be addressing this soon.
I am thinking a cracked filament in the plug wire. I will let you all know if this helps.

Strange thing is that there is not a lack of power on the bottom end.
Oh well, talk to you all soon.

I tried the GM module fix and the wheeler started but the module could not control the timing. I replace the cdi on my 88 bayou 300 with my fathers 92 bayou and fixed this problem. I have ordered a new cdi for mine. I don't know if this helps, but it sure sounds like your having a timing problem. My fathers problem is in the carb.

Well here is what it probably is the carb the carbs are sooooo sensitive on these bayous like 1000 of a cm off and it will mess your whole machine over power wise, if i were u i would try and find a honda big red and put one of them carbs on it. way less maintenance and they work nice. also your plugs could be done and check your air filter.

Hey Steve, thanks for being helpful but chances are the OP has long since fixed the problem or sold his machine.
You should always check the date of the post you are replying to. In this case the post was made in 2006.
