On the gas engines, the front wheel assist propeller shaft is in the way of the flywheel cover. Too much of a pain to remove it, in my opinion.

Easier way. Remove the spark plugs. Remove converter air filter from the belt housing. Use a 3/4 or 19mm socket, manually turn the engine counterclockwise with the socket/ratchet/extension combination. Watch your valves. You'll be watching for the exhaust to open then close, then intake should open and then close. STOP when it closes. Run a long screwdriver down the spark plug hole, keep turning the engine manually counterclockwise until the screwdriver stops coming up. You can go a little past TDC too, just not much. Then you can adjust the intake & exhaust valves on that cylinder. Repeat for the opposite cylinder.

There's another really easy way that I use but I do not recommend folks using that method unless you have experience with it. I call it the EOIC method and at this point, that's all you need to know. It just saves a couple minutes is all but if you do it for a living, you find ways to do things that might save a minute or two on every job.
