Recently purchased an 2004 KX85 for my son. We live in New Mexico. The bike is obviously running rich due to its use of spark plugs. Plugs end up black and wet after just a few hours of riding. The carb is a 28mm Keihin PWK. I have ordered a new jet suggested by my local dealer but would like to hear some feedback if anyone has already done the homework.

One of the first things I would do is move the Jet needle clip position up one notch and check to see that the air screw is out 2 turns, then go to changing jets

Done that, I have moved it all the way out. I did everything that it instructed to do in the manual. Did not make any difference. Maybe a little performance increase at best.
