What gas are you using? I just purchased an 02 Vulcan 500 used. Someone told me it has a high performance engine so I should use premium gas. Is this correct?
Just burn the cheap stuff (if there is any anymore) an you'll be fine.

Iwould like to know if anyone has drilled the vent hole bigger in the gas cap to prevent the vapor lock problem the 800 are famous for.I don't know if it would work but tempted to try it.Also has anyone had a problem with running the 10% ethonal gas?The manual says it's fine but the dealer told me not to.I haven't had a problem so far.

The owner's manual says to use premium which I do, is regular unleaded really ok to use in this bike (800A)?

Doc , Regular is all you should be putting in your 800, the 800 has a problem with carbon build-up. The cheaper fuel burns hotter which helps with keeping the carbon build-up to a mininum. You can also add some seafoam to the gas about every 4th tank , along with going out an running the bike up to the rev limiter every now an then(thats the fun part)

Does this bike have a rev limiter? Also if I use regular do I have to worry about overheating, I live in Arizona and a couple of months it will be very hot here.

Listen to woody and start burning regular, the 800's hate premium. Yes it has a rev limiter, tops out about 8200. Get a can of seafoam and run through it now if you have been using premium. Overheating?, 2 words for ya, watercooled. Listen for the fan, make sure it comes on when you are sitting in traffic.

Use only 87, I've had really good luck with Chevron. If your Radiator fan is working ok, the summer heat is not a problem. I live in Tucson, and the fan comes on during a ride thru town, even now. Be sure to change your oil regularly during the summer months.

Enjoy your ride

I have a 2003 800A, my owner's manual says to use unleaded with minimum antiknock index of 87. But has a caution: If engine "knocking" or "pinging" occurs, use a different brand of gas or a higher octane rating. The Clymer manual simply states to use regular unleaded. I have tried premium (1 tank full) I think the bike runs better on regular.

Yeah, that's why I stuck it there. I'm trying to figure out how to animate it so the poor bassturd is smashing his head on the keyboard
