I have a 1996 VN800A , how do I know what series chain I have , they offer a 530 and a 520.

You can always measure the chain you have, here are the specs. Keep in mind that the width is the width of the roller.

520 5/8 inch pitch, 1/4 inch wide
525 5/8 inch pitch, 5/16 inch wide
530 5/8 inch pitch, 3/8 inch wide
630 3/4 inch pitch, 3/8 inch wide

You will have to change the sprockets when you change the chain out so really at that point you could go with either 520 or 530. A 520 will handle the power of the 800 very well and is slightly lighter than the 530.

Actually I just wanted to change the sprockets out to change the gearing as the chain is still in great shape. I wasn't sure what was stock. Thanks.

Frequently the chain's size is marked on the sideplates. Usually only on one side of the chain.

It should also be stamped on the side of some links......likely not every link, but say every 8 or 10 links there is probably a number.

Are you trying to gear the bike up or down?
