I didn't really know whether to post here or the Mechanics section.
Anyhoos , I notice that my zx9 has a white woven textile around the headers.
Looks ( very ) professionally done. Is this a factory or potentially factory jobby or the work of the previous owner?
I'd pick it for an asbestos textile only I think that's a big no no in this day and age.
Wotcha reckon?

You've stolen my pipes!

That is better known as header wrap, or pipe wrap. They might have wrapped the OEM, or they may be aftermarket.

I've heard reports of headers turning brittle, but mainly on autos, not bikes. I think you'll be OK, I can't give you any longevity report on mine, bike was only on the road 3 months. I checked them when I installed them on the 750 a few days ago, and they were fine.

If your pipes are stainless, you're fine although they'll discolor a bit under there. If they're steel, the header wrap can pick up moisture and cause the pipes to rust at an alarming rate. On the plus side, the wrap will keep the engine a bit cooler in the summer since the radiator won't have to deal with all that heat radiating off the pipes. (Which is probably why it was put there in the first place.)

Okay , thanks for that. I suspect you'd be perfectly right in your suspicions as to why the wraps were installed in the first place.
The PO was from this area of NQ as well and we're regularly riding in 100 / 110 F + here.
I think I'll leave things as they are:biggrin:

I have to keep on my feet around you Aussies!

I was over at a friends today. He is building a drag bike, with every known piece of Kawi on it! KZ900 motor, ZX-12 front end, KZ1000 rear end. But the best part is that it has purple wheels! And he's leaving them that way, he swears that purple is faster! Thought that might make your day!

I'm thinking of starting a campaign against "poiple wheel discrimination"
We of the poiple wheels have been oppressed and vilified for too long!!!
Viva la revolution!!!!
Poiple wheels have rights , too.
Poiple wheels will be liberated . O' yes they will.
Poiple wheel bashing is unaustralian , unamerican and unsomething else as well.
Power to the poiple wheels I say.

I may not change mine now!!!

( bloody ugly lookin' poiple wheels , grumble , grumble )
