I have a 2004 250 Kawasaki bayou and an '02 220. They look virtually identical. The '04 250 had oil pump go out before I got it and it's already disassembled. I didn't get all of the parts with it (pull start and a few minor motor parts). I went ahead and bought another oil pump but then got to thinking that it may be easier to just get another motor to stick on it, since I don't know what the oil pump breaking may have done to the top end anyways. There seems to be a whole lot more 220 parts available out there than 250. I was wondering if parts from a 220 motor would fit on the 250, or if I have to, can I just put a 220 motor on the 250? Thanks!

The 220 will bolt right in! The parts outside of the cylinder and piston even carry the same part numbers.

If the spark plug is the one that was in when it ran out of oil pressure, read it in a very bright light for any sparkles of metal. That is a sure fire means of finding ring or piston damage.

Before you decide on the swap pop the valve covers off and inspect the camshaft lobes for any evidence of scoring from running without oil, then do a compression test if the cam lobes look good. If the compression test gives you a reading within 80% of new, just install a new oil pump and go for it.

If the cam is good, but the compression is low, a new piston and rings from Kaw or Wiseco is inexpensive and easy to install if the cylinder bore is not scored. Compression will be way low if that has happened.

Outstanding! That's exactly the sort of information I was looking for. I appreciate the response.

Just 'in case' I have to slap a 220 motor in it, will there be alot of difference in power? The 220 I have pulls me around good, but I haven't driven the 250 yet (was broke when I got it).

I'm REALLY impressed by the bayou so far, it's a great all around machine.

I do not think it is enough power difference that you would really notice. I suspect the larger engine was more of a marketing and emission move.

Hey Matt, do you think that you could pull a part number off of the carburetor thats on the 220 for me? I have a '88 Bayou 220 and I'm looking for a new carburetor.
Yup, I'll see if I can remember tomorrow to get the numbers off of it for you. If I get another complete engine cheap for my 250, I may have a 220 carb for you.

I bought 2 220 bayous for $100 about 2 &1/2 years ago. I was told that one had a 250 engine and the other was a 220. When I got them, they were disassembled. After a few times of looking at another one, I had mine put back together. My question is, how can I tell if mine actually is a 250. I ride with a guy that rides a 220 bayou and he can't keep up. Suggestions?
