The belt is causing a crunching sound. I removed the cover to see what was happening. When I take of the belt is jumping a little on the rear pulley. It stops after I get going. The belt is well within service limits, but does have cracks in it. Any advice?

Run your finger along the friction surface of the sheaves on the clutches. If they have wear grooves that will catch the belt and cause jumping.

Also check the clutches for any looseness with the belt removed. If the bearings get excessive wear the sheaves will wobble and create belt jumping. That can also lead to a broken crankshaft if allowed to continue.

If the belt cracks are through to the friction surfaces of the belt, that too will cause belt jumping and the belt should be replaced to prevent damage to the clutches.
