would it be a good idea to go to a 180/55zr17 on the rear of my 98 ZX-6R, i also heard about putting a taller tire(120/65zr17) on the front helps handling?Anybody ever heard of this. What do you guys think?

Factory sizes are 170/60zr17 rear
120/60zr17 front

BTW: I plan on buying Dunlop 208s

The wider tire on the rear will be slower going into the curves, but you'll have a bigger contact patch. the slightly taller tire in the front will help the agility of the bike, so it will help it turn in quicker. I'd say go with it. The D208s are good tires too.

ok so you say it is a good idea what exactly do you mean by "slower going into turns" and wouldnt the front tire help balance that out
