So I got pulled over for the first time last night. Was not fun. The officer pulled me over for speeding (who would have guessed?) when he got me I was going 60+ in a 35 school zone at a little after midnight. He could have taken me into custody, but out of the kindness of his heart he gave me a citiation. I have court in 10 days. I have no idea how much the ticket is going to be. Lesson learned.

I have the best solution for this problem:

Stop speeding in school zones.

the only time you'll catch me creeping over the speed limit is in the nice deserted twisties when nobody else is around for quite a ways.

I don't know about Az, but around here the speed limit around schools is for certain times of the day, unless your talking about college. at the other than specified times the speed limit is the same as the rest of the road. but slow down anyway I know it is hard to hold that meanie back

ouch

good luck with that ticket, that is a bummer, at least you recognize that you were speeding and he did give you a break. still, hope for the best at court, maybe the magistrate or judge will be a rider ?!?

Heh, I hate school zones. They are a necessity and laws protect them... But what gets to me is the roads are SO straight. I can almost count how many curves there are in a 10 mile radius I've seen.

That said, it's very easy to speed... but still you need to watch your speed. I was reminded of this by a kind officer as well... kind meaning he let me go with a warning. I hope not to meet another one anytime soon.

Take care out there...

He didn't need a radar detector. He was right behind me and I didn't see him. He said when he was right behind me I was going 40, and then I started to pull away. I was talking to some other people who have had to go to court for a similar violation and they said they had to pay a fine of $400-$500. There goes those pipes I wanted :(

Can I just start to laugh at the Radar Detector believers out there! Unless your local law enforcement is dumb and there are some there is no way the best radar detectors are going to help you in time to save a ticket. Now a jammer is another thing. Can't even count all the people who have had a radar detector in their car and pulled over..

PS they automatically got the ticket.....

psst don't tell anyone

siasmaster; The #1 important thing to remember is I never tell people it is OK to speed,I only try to help those who are going to do it anyways..I don't need a police officer to tell me this "BUT" I was talking to my brother inlaw who is a Tempe AZ traffic cop this morning and he said the same thing I was going to tell you. When a cop comes up behind you on the street he may have been clocking people coming towards you in which case a RADAR DETECTOR on your bike would have picked him up and you would not have your problem. #2 posibility is he might have had his radar unit just turned on steady driving down the street in case some dumb azz was going the other way at 80MPH to which you would not have your problem...Like I've always said #1 you need to buy the BEST RADAR DETECTOR MADE .. #2 and most important" you need to spend the time riding at legal speeds for several weeks to learn how to use it correctly or it is totally useless. it is intierly posible a good $300.00 detector could have saved you this problem you now have. Most people think just like you! Oh those things don't work,or they buy one and drive like a total dumb azz never learning how to use it properly get a ticket and blame it on the radar detector and tell other people they don't work, when in reality the only thing not working was their brain (LOL) So you might want to consider picking up one of the only two top notch radar detectors made and take some time to learn how to use it! Good Luck and Ride Safe my Friend" PS: I use the Escort Passport 8500 X50 with a helmet speaker, which is the #1 Radar/Lazer Detector made, the helmet speaker is an absolute must have"

1 Adam 12; Not to desrespect you or your job in anyway, but Radar Detectors do work my friend. As much as police would like to think they don't :) Just some examples from this weekends ride! 1st one I was going 40 MPH over the speed limit coming into a blind mountain turn I could not see the cop coming the other way but I knew there was traffic in front of me for any cop with instant on radar to clock first (which he did) and I piled the brakes on right now real hard,I was 3MPH under when he got a lock on me! 2nd time I was coming up a hill at 110 MPH in a 55 MPH zone with lots of guys going over the top to trip instant on radar for me again he clocked some of the people going over the top and I got him and passed him at 55 MPH BTW:(I was not going to go over the top of the hill at 110 MPH even if the detector had not went off) that is what I mean by not riding like a total dumb azz! 3rd time I was running pretty steady at between 40 and 60 MPH over on some real nice twisty road in forest type rolling hills, when I got a quick flash of a LAZER blip in my ear,I shut her down right quick and waited, and waited, and waited,I caught one more quick blip, the I waited some more, and some more, finally 5 & 3/4 miles later there they were with a LAZER set up in the trees getting every dummy that was speeding without a LAZER detector. I was picking their reflections up through the trees for over 5 miles to which someone else not listening to what their detector was trying to tell them may have speeded up again and got caught anyways! Which brings up a good one from about a month ago,it was a foggy in spots morning on a stretch of interstate highway in the foggy spots I was going 10MPH under the limit and in the clear I was going about 60MPH over the limit there was a fair amount of traffic to get picked up before me so I was good to go IMO when there she went a milly blip of instant on radar,I droped to the speed limit and sat there while lots of people that I saw with rader detectors just went right on speeding by me,I then came into a clear down hill stretch of road there they were pulling these no minds with radar detectors over in droves,at least 7 or 8 of the dumb azz's,while right when I was going to pick it back up again I caught another short blip and stayed at the speed limit as more cars with radar detectors went zipping by me and you guessed it there they were being stoped by more cops,so I figure this is going to go on for a ways now and I stay at the speed limit for the next 30+ miles till I turn off on another highway and I saw the same thing two more times in those 30+ miles! So what I'm saying here is if your BRAIN works and you took the time to learn your RADAR DETECTOR and how cops think as well as act, then YES THEY DO WORK! "BUT" only with a brain is attatched to them!

In Ontario, radar detectors etc. are illegal and the fines are bad too. However, unwarranted excessive speeding gives all sport bike riders a bad rap. At the right time I see no problem with it, it is your choice.

Track days might be a less expensive option.

None taken...

The best radar detector is your wrist - Just don't speed...ha ha

Ps we also patrol by the air and view points with stop watches.... Saw a couple of riders hauling a few weeks back and a big crowd of Highway Patrol officers on motors waiting for everyone. I stopped and talked to them for a little and they had a few reports of mischievous riders doing stunts + a few caused accidents hence the extra enforcement....

superbike mike,
It is not a requirement to lock your mph into the radar gun in most states. One of the things they do for training on that is you have to get good enough so you can tell how fast a person is going, so if a cop sees you slam on your brakes and you looked to be going 110mph, he can go to court and say, you were going 110mph based on his past experience and training.

plead not guilty and let them set a court date for you...they dont want to pay jurers to set there and listen to a guy tellin them that he wasnt speeding and the da usually will come up to you before the court and offer you deffered judification which means if you dont get another ticket in 3 or 6 months that they will throw the ticket away....just did it..cost me 250 for a lawyer(i hate lawyers) but it will keep it off your record....

Don't know about Texas, but in California you get a court commisioner and no juries.....It's you , the court commisioner (judge) and the officer.
Better pick the officers vacation day!

Plan B is guilty with an explanation. I've seen a few of those thrown out - pretty rare, but happens

Stuart; I've been riding 40+ years and Road Raced AMA/CMA Pro for many years. I have NEVER got one speeding ticket EVER and I ride way to fast on the street 60% of the time at least! Your story about the Officers training standing up in court does not hold water with me at all! Due to the fact 14 motorcycles mine being one of them got tickets for racing/dangerous driving and alot more stuff I can't remember ($1,500 worth each minumum) on the street once, the cop said he saw us while he was sitting doing his paper work in his car (no radar on) he said when he caught up with us you were well over 120MPH and he was right" (we were getting gas 1/2 mile down the road from were he saw us) other wise he would have never caught us. Yes we were racing" Yes we were probably going at least easaly 140 to 150MPH when we went by him! We went (all 14 of us) to court on a week day taking time off work and drove 250 miles to his town to dispute his tickets and training! We had a month to prepare our defence (with no lawyer I might add) when we were done with this Highway Patrol Officer the Judge DISMISSED our case! Now I will never say on the NET how we did this because I don't want smart azz,no brain, punks reading this and getting away with racing on the street! The Highway Patrol Officer got us outside the court house and said "IF YOU EVER COME BACK INTO MY AREA AGAIN YOU WILL BE GOING TO JAIL FOR SOMETHING AND YOU CAN COUNT ON THAT" have a nice day boy's! (he was rightly upset IMO) Now no time on the street/highway is this smart to do but we all being Pro Road Racers at the time saw it to be pretty safe as we were on open highway 4 lanes BLVD in the middle 5:30 AM sunrise (it was light) Sunday morning with no one on the road except us and the Cop doing his paper work hiding out of site (BTW he saw us under braking as we were stoping for gas anyway) we were probably 180MPH+ just before he saw us! I do not in anyway think it was smart for your average street rider to be doing what we did,and it was almost as dumb for a bunch of Pro Road Racers to be doing IMO! But thats life"
