When I bought my KZ1000, the gas tank was pretty rusy. It had not been ridden in 22 years! I read this in the internet and thought I would try it. Find the toilet bowl cleaner called "The Works". K-mart has it. I removed my petcock and plugged the hole. I put in 2 bottles of The Works along with a handfull of small, clean rocks. Shut the cap and proceeded to shake for a few minutes. Let it set for awhile and repeat. I did this on and off about 30 minutes. I drained the tank and flushed with water. I then used the air hose and after that I inserted my heat gun in the cap for awhile. I then sprayed WD-40 inside.
It worked Perfectly! You cannot tell the tank was rusty! I have installed the tank and the bike runs good. The cleaner costs $1.99 a bottle. I was sceptical when I first read this, I am a believer now!

It did not seem to hurt the paint or the cap gasket. My paint is not very good, its been repainted years ago.
